Acme Rocket Quartet

About Me

Acme Rocket Quartet formed in 1993 following the expiration of guitarist Roger Kunkel's previous band Thin White Rope. Steve Edberg played drums and provided a living room for "rehearsal". Dave Thompson played bass. Improvised jams became themes/songs that usually were loosely refered to during gigs. The music was instrumental and "wacky" drawing from diverse sources inluding Raymond Scott, 60s film soundtracks, Django Reinhardt, Miles Davis, Hiest movies and Lounge music. During the recording of their self titled debut (1995/6) John Killebrew began regular duties on trumpet. Later he would purchase a Rhodes and play that too. After recording basic tracks on Ultra-High-Frequency (1998) Steve de-acme-vated himself. Rusi Gustafson became drummer for the less frequently playing quartet from 1999 through the final recording, Sound Camera (2004).
Dave is the myspace janitor and Roger drops in when the moon is waxing gibbous to read secret messages from secret places.

Sounds Like: "...Hearkens back to the panoramic soundtrack work of Ennio Morricone... The band is equally comfortable taking on straight lounge, Tex-Mex, moody rock and jazz. Ultra-High-Frequency is not to be overlooked." CMJ
"This Davis, California sound factory meshes styles into something amazingly fresh rooted in a West Coast jazz tradition. ...gives reason to celebrate jazz musicians who look to the past to create the future." ROCKPILE
"Acme Rocket Quartet staat voor een rare cocktail, en die gaan er bij de freaks meestal goed in. Een flinke scheut jazz, wat post rock en een rustige zondag middag sound. Maar het is geen typische jazz. De jazz moet je een beetje zien zoals de ..Rare Grooves.. compilatie van Blue Note." L'ENTREPOT
"...challenging, entertaining and like nothing else in the CD racks today. Fun in the extreme." TOAST MAGAZINE
"Even Jesus would dig this." SPLENDID MAGAZINE
"Bizzarre brilliance." ANODYNE
