Virgilio Gomes

English: Virgílio Gomes (guitar)Begins as an autodidact and later continues at the conservatory of Brazil (in Rio de Janeiro). 1987 begins his studies at university “Estácio de Sá”. 1987 on (to 1995) he tours african musician (Ghana) Nabby Clifford, like also his own quartet “Samambaia”. 1988 he´s demanded as a guitar player by producer/poet Nelson Motta, and works with the singer Luísa Maria. 1990 starts his activity as a teacher at the music school of Pendotiba, Niterói/ Rio de Janeiro. 1992 exams in several disciplines, among others “guitar/improvisation” lessons he has had with his professor Nelson Faria, one of the actual most demanded guitar players of Brasil. 1995 he starts to teach improvisation at “Centro Ian Guest de Aperfeiçoamento”. Recordings for the Cd “O cara do tempo” by singer Oswaldo Pereira.(publ. UNI-RIO,1996) In 1996 Plays in the big band of clarinet player/composer Paulo Moura. The top of this collaboration is marked by the cd recording of “coisas de deus” by singer Martinho da Vila(publ. RCA Victor-records) 1997 performs with singer “Amelinha”, like also with the double bass players Yuri Popov and Bi Ribeiro. 1999 Recordings of the cd production “Hard Bossa” of the group “No Olho da Rua”. 1998-2000 directs and produces the cd recordings of “Nau dos Ventos”, in which he presents his work as guitar player, composer and arranger. From 2001 on: In Lisbon he works in several groups, that are particularly dedicated to african and brasilian music. Portugues: Músico profissional desde 1986, Virgílio teve sua formação musical no Conservatório Brasileiro de Música, na Universidade Estácio de Sá e no CIGAM, onde foi formado em Harmonia com Ian Guest e em Improvisação com o guitarrista Nelson Faria. Já participou como guitarrista convidado em vários cds de diversos artistas com estilos diferentes. De 1997 à 2001 foi professor de improvisação e de guitarra no Centro Ian Guest de Aperfeiçoamento musical ( CIGAM ), à convite do próprio Ian e do guitarrista Nelson Faria, passaram pelas suas aulas cerca de 250 alunos nesses anos. Em 2006 participou do Lagos Jazz fest ( Portugal ) com o seu actual trabalho: O Duokapi e tambem como docente nos 5 dias de workshops. Participou da Lagos Jazz Summit Band neste festival.
