Hi. Peter here. I was born at Saint John's Hospital in Lowell, Massachusetts, the 2nd son of Fred and Florence Gallagher. As with the four generations that preceded me (beginning in April 1861), I grew up in Lowell, attending the Franco American, Pine Street, Morey and Dailey Schools. After graduating Junior High, I attended Bishop Guertin in Nashua, New Hampshire and went on to The University of Lowell (now UMass Lowell), with a bachelor's degree in International Business Finance.
I am the middle born child of 5, with 2 sisters (Paula -44 & Lisa -40) and 2 brothers (Stephen - 43 & Matthew - 32).
My jobs took me from Lowell to Woburn in 1994, then to Waltham in 2002 and, finally, to Norwood in 2005. After deciding I had invested too much time 'living for work' and too little time 'working to fund my life', I returned to my roots in Lowell on June 30th, 2006.
There were some rough times awaiting me in the fall and winter. My dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. My Nephew Ronnie (Wetmore) fell from the University Avenue Bridge and was lost to the river until March. My dad passed away on December 13th, the Saturday before Christmas. They say bad things come in threes. Perhaps the powers that be felt these two events were quite enough.
Then, a most unlikely turn of events occurred. A young man whom I had known for over 3 years, one with a difficult past stretching back as far as he can recall, found himself in a spot where he had a chance to turn his life around. And though I knew it would mean a LOT of stress would be coming with it, I wanted to do all I could to help him achieve his goals. So, on March 9th, I welcomed Kris into my home as a foster-son.
With guarded optimisim at each turn, I watched as he set and met one goal after another. In the span of just 10 short weeks, he qualified for and obtained his G.E.D. (scoring in the 98th percentile for math and 91st percentile for science), passed his driving learners permit, started a new job at Lowell General Hospital, was accepted to Middlesex community college and is well on his way to his goal of obtaining a degree in nursing.
I'm sure I will look back on this decision as one of the best of my life. I'm hopeful Kris will do the same.
I have worked for Lowell General Hospital (1985-1990), Client/Server Software (1990-1999), McKesson (1999-2001), Waltham Hospital (2001-2003) and Caritas Norwood Hospital (2003 - 2006), where I was the Supervisor of Patient Registration. I moved on from this job on June 23rd to return to Lowell and persue a new position in the financial arena. I started my new position as Financial Analyst at The Lahey Clinic in Burlington, on October 2, 2006.
I have been an avid member of the BSA since September 1978, as well as the OA since May 17th, 1980. I become a member of the Vigil Honor on October 11th, 1992, being given the name "Macheleman Elangomellan" which, being translated from Lenni Lenape is "All that we value". My first summer at the Council's Camp Wah-tut-ca was in 1979. I joined the staff for the 1981, 1982, 1983 and 1987 seasons, continuing as a "weekend warrior" until the Greater Lowell Council's absorpsion in 1998.
On weekends, I luv hangin' out with friends up in Dracut, Billerica and Lowell and, once returning to the area, resuming my association with the BSA.
In March 2007, though besought with anxiety, I invited my now foster-son, Kris, into my home. His life up to then had been filled with trials and tribulations, but I was confident he'd have what it takes to turn things around. We both had to grow accustom to the other's idosyncracies and he has continued to amaze me with his drive, determination and strength of spirit. I keep him focused and he keeps me sane. :-) He celebrated his 18th birthday in June 2007 and will be starting college in the fall. Although I've known him for 4 years now, it's only these last few months that I've grown to really know him, as well as to love him.
In the summer of 2008, I FINALLY took the plunge an bought my first home! It's in North Billerica. I'm here now, typing this adendum to keep my profile current. :-)
