I dig transcendence in music. I tend to value feel and energy and treat the lyrics as secondary. Generally speaking, music without drums doesn't hold my interest, unless the rhythm or melody or performance is mesmerizing, and it happens, but not often..... I've been playing drums since I was about 8. Hard to say if it was "Heart of Glass" or "Black Dog" that first drew me in, but I haven't been the same since. Starting in 1984, I've been a member of Slang Syndrome, Rapture of the Deep, Cultural Commandos, The Gaze, The Vestrymen, Hot Cop, Bison, Jack Frosting, The Gravy, Betwixt, Casper and the House of David, Torian, Beacon and now Rotary Club..... Of these, the Vestrymen and Jack Frosting will always be very close to my heart, since I helped found them and stuck with them for many years of practice, records and shows..... I've met many cool people over the years, and only one or two real nimrods. These days I have a family to support, so my life revolves around them and the drums see much less of me..... However, as of November 2007, Rotary Club is gracing the town with a new CD called "Vis-a-Vis", of which you can get your very own from CD Baby or cherry pick your favorite tracks through iTunes .....Unless I am dreaming, I think I played it with ex-Pere Ubu bass guru Tony Maimone, keyboardist J Johnson and cello wunderkind Jonah Sacks..... Since you seem to be a glutton for punishment, let's quickly stroll down memory lane, nine years before the Red Sox went all the way, with an early incarnation of Jack Frosting, OK?.. ..

A Music Snob gets caught up on music of the 1970s and 80s

I enjoyed the rockets' red glare last night at Leo's place on the pond with a backyard fire going and a group of music fans born when Bobby Kennedy was still alive taking all this in.  Although t...

Why has Dakota lost his mojo?

Here's a spring time gripe from your favorite worrier.     PB Teen just came out with their summer catalog and the cover is deeply troubling.  I mean deep.  Just scandalous.  ...

How Not to Rise

This one's a bit touchy, and a bit disgusting, so be warned. One Monday morning I awoke to a difficult situation.  Unlike the usual symphony I normally have queued up in the CD, this morning I aw...

Central Massachusetts Riders Unite

Finding a disused trace of railroad track near my work is the sort of thing that gives me a deep thrill, and I got to experience it recently.  Massachusetts is a state bound by steel rails, albei...

Mark Sturm: Lost Screeds

Slang Syndrome practiced after school in the storage attic of my parent's 1812 farmhouse on Bay Road in Hadley, Massachusetts during the fall of 1984. It was in those quiet times when not playing, su...

On Nearing the End

The Vestrymen tour of 1993 begat the final ten months of the band's existence but did succeed in the getting some main points across.  Watching the "Backyard" video, I am reminded not of the quas...

Hub Fans Bid Splendid Winter Adieu

Had an interesting call with my Dad the other night.  I got him caught up on the goings on in a biweekly phone call, as is my habit.  Well, he said something that stopped me for a moment.&nb...
