In the tradition of many great rockers, Kalen is an artist turned musician. She has sung and played the piano since she was a young girl growing up in Exeter, New Hampshire, writing songs on the piano before she understood what songwriting was. Always torn between the most successful form of self expression, Kalen oscillated between fine arts, acting and music. After completing a BA at Penn with a major in Fine Arts and a minor in Anthropology she felt the urgency of the music she had began writing privately the last two years of college and the desire to perform again after the college rock band she formed dis-banded. She moved to New York to pursue the dream.Kalen draws from all of the music she has grown up listening to, all of which can be heard in her songs, from classic rock to the blues, soul, jazz, trip-hop & hip-hop. The originality of Kalen’s sound comes from her writing process in which the first draft of the piano and melodies are simultaneously and seamlessly derived through organic improvisation. Kalen’s love for other languages and cultures shines through in her lyrics, which float from English to Spanish and Italian. “Kalen is a very promising singer and songwriter who brings in influences in her writing and music ranging from Pablo Naruda to Eric Satie,†says Ishrat Ansari, owner of the West Village landmark, Caffe Vivaldi. Dan Dipillido of Jezebel Music reviewed a recent show saying, "Kalen performed her jazzy/funky songs with vivacity and grace, singing her catchy compositions with soul from behind her polished keys."The honky-tonk hip-hop EP which is currently being featured on this page reprsents Kalen's move toward more groove driven songs and her experimentation with combining various, often unrelated, genres.
