About Me
Me supposes, in appearance, I's like a man though somewhat shorter. Me wears a blue coat and big yellow boots and a battered hat with a blue feather. Old Tom Bombadillo has a long brown beard, bright blue eyes, and a red face creased with laughter. I am a merry old fellow and enjoy laughing and singing, I do.
..
I be living a day's journey from the nearest settlement with me wife, Goldberry, "Daughter of the River". Me wife describes me as being "Master of wood, water and hill." I suppose I nearly always speaks in stress-timed metre, or sings in the same rhythym but that's only for the songs and storytellin'. I suppose I have quite a great deal of knowledge and power but me still remains highly mysterious. I don't much like to talk about me insight, or personal feelings but I might as well ramble on for a wee bit longer.
..
I lives in a house on the side of a hill between the Old Forest and the Barrow-downs. Me calls this area - bordered on the north by the Great East Road - I calls that me country but I don't own it. Things here belong to's themeselves. I's just the master. I's don't like to cross the borders of me country, though I been to visit Farmer Maggot in the Shire and I was acquainted with Barliman Butterbur at the Prancing Pony in Bree.
..
I found me wife one day in a pool far down the River Withywindle. Each year at the end of summer, I's go along the river to gather water lilies for Goldberry. It was on this last trip of the year in September of 3018 that I's meet a few strapping young, little hobbits running through me woods a wee bit while ago and I happened to save them from Old Man Willow. One of them was carrying a ring with him and it looked a wee bit strange to me but I didn't much mind to it. I gave them a few daggers and word got back to me that they help killed some witch king. Great thing that is. I don't much like witches.
..
Anywho, I figure me self to be a relatively spry fellow, and would bring many a laugh to most who came across me. Only the sternest of faces could resist cracking a smirk at me rhymes. I can guarentee ye that. Me only real adversary is Old Man Willow, who holds dominion over miles of me "country".
..
Me wifes origins are a wee bit strange. Her name may be a Westron derivative of the Sindarin Golodh-bereth, meaning "Flower Queen". She be originally a Maia spirit who "went native", binding herself to the river, perhaps somewhat like Melian binding herself to Elu Thingol.
..
I happen to be a Maia, the oldest ever of me kind, as I seems to have unlimited supernatural power inside the boundaries that I set for me self, and that's the reason why I has such powers is the fact that I have content to live within these limits. "Eldest, that's what I am... Tom was here before the river and the trees; Tom remembers the first raindrop and the first acorn. He made paths before the Big People, and saw the little People arriving. He was here before the Kings and the graves and the Barrow-wights. When the Elves passed westward, Tom was here already, before the seas were bent. He knew the dark under the stars when it was fearless - before the Dark Lord came from Outside". I be refering to Melkor and not this Sauron feller I keep hearing about.
..
Gandalf (Mithandir) calls me the eldest being in existence; this is also evident by me Sindarin name Iarwain Ben-adar (Eldest and Fatherless) but I'm not too sures about that. I just be pretty old. Dwarves calls me Forn (Scandinavian, meaning "Ancient" or "Belonging to the distant past"), Men calls me Orald, which is from the Old English oreald meaning "of great age". All these names apparentlys mean "Eldest" or "Elder" or something of that nature. However, Treebeard calls himself the eldest living being of Middle-earth and that he was there before anyone else but it not be a contest. Me's just one of the "Eldest" I suppose.
..
If it still remains a mystery as to who I really am, then you just don't understand some things. Some things just "are". As Goldberry once says about me (the one and only Tom Bombadil), "He is... ...He is, as you have seen him." And when one of them little Hobbit fellers asks me old self who me is and me only replies to that is, "Don't you know my name yet? That's the only answer." I am just... Tom. Not a whole lot else.
..
Me figures me just done rambled on enough so I best be getting back to some other stuffs. If ye wants to know more, I's to be here for a way while longer then any of ye other fellers.
