La Ruta

About Me

"Imagine the pseudo-Brit grooves of Soda Stereo tropically realigned to suggest Juan Luis Guerra. Plus lyrics that go for the heart ..." -Village Voice
"...arty, Police-like pop, punched up with Caribbean folk rhythms." -NY Daily News
Pioneers of the local Rock en Español scene, La Ruta was formed in the early '90s by Henry Mena (vox/gtr), Carlos Guzman (bs/vox) and Luis Jesus Ruiz (dr), three Dominican musicians based in New York City. Originally a tropical/rock hybrid equally influenced by The Police and Dominican rocker Luis Dias, the band later leaned a bit more on the rock part of their sound, while maintaining their gift for rhythm and melodic songwriting intact.
Despite various lineup changes over the years (local veteran Jim Jackson took over the drum chair in 1996) and a series of guests (Willie Mosquera, Rafael "Xuxi" Lazzaro, Damian Anger, Jorge Subervi, Alex Guerra) taking over bass duties since 1999, the band performed regularly in area clubs such as The Spiral, Underground, La Kueva, SOBs, and both the legendary, now defunct CBGB and Palladium.
La Ruta has received widespread airplay in Argentina, Mexico, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic, while also touring in the latter two.
On their 1999 tour of Venezuela they received an award for their exciting performance at the first annual Festival de la Musica, in Caracas.
In addition, La Ruta has also been the opening act for international rock en español acts such as Enanitos Verdes, La Portuaria, Desorden Publico, Los Tres, JLS, Julieta Venegas and Aleks Syntek.
In 2007, after a five-year hiatus, the band reunited with a new lineup consisting of original members Henry Mena (vocals/guitar) and Luís Jesús Ruiz (drums), as well as long-time collaborator Alex Guerra (bass/vocals).
+ + + + +
