The Voyager Rilith-
The Father's War
Bodies were being dragged one by one into the breaking tide. A group of Rothin soldiers were silencing the few remaining survivors of the assault and washing blood from their hands. In the fading Chakros light, it was hard to tell what was blood and what was pools of water swirling on the beach. Some of the soldiers sat and rested. Others helped their own injured as best they could. Some screams were abruptly ended. And in the midst of this, a young man was sitting on the rocks, away from the activity. The soldier, a skinny boy with brown hair, was cleaning his sword. It was the only comfort he could find after all that had happened. And he still didn't feel right about any of it.
"Aaron!"
The boy looked up to see who had called him, and witnessed a hulking figure striding towards him through the sand. The large man sat on the rocks next to him, looking as tired and careworn as the rest of the soldiers. He was silent for a moment, and then turned to the boy.
"You did better than I could've asked for, Aaron. I'm proud of you, to say the least." He paused again, looking at the bustle that was still taking place further along the beach. Sunlight was fading fast. The man seemed on the verge of telling Aaron something vastly important, but he continued to hesitate. Aaron decided to prompt him.
"Is there something you wanted to discuss, father?" he asked, looking politely interested. He sheathed the sword he had been washing. "Only I don't mean to rush you at all, but the light is fading and we'll need to be moving again soon."
"Yes, I know. In fact, that is what we needed to discuss."
"Tactics, father?"
"Not quite. Actually, it was more your decision making that we need to talk about."
"Father, please, I only came because-"
"I'm not admonishing you, Aaron, hold your tongue." He breathed a heavy sigh, the kind weighted down with a burden beyond most men. The kind of burden one feels when faced with a terrible decision. "You've done well here tonight. And the men are proud of you as much as I am. But there is something...that I must do. That must be done."
Aarons face was almost unreadable in the blood-red light coming over the high Chakros cliffs, but his father could sense the apprehension. He just couldn't tell whose apprehension.
"I'm not going to lead this army any more after tonight," he said, weighing the words one by one. "I've decided I will take on one more mission before I retire. But then I leave the Rothin Naval Advance in your stewardship. They are yours to direct as you see fit. All men have been instructed to follow orders without question, and that they will continue to do with you in charge."
"But, father! You can't do that, I have no experience! What of the admirals, surely one of them could take the command-"
"I only request three things of you, Aaron, and I will not repeat myself. You must NEVER question your commanding officer, for one. Two, I have chosen you because I believe your talents in battle merit nothing less. And three..."
A blackness darker than night had settled. No stars shone over this beach tonight; there were no guiding lights for the atrocities of this Navy. The Gods were angry, to be sure. Only after the breaking of Raclyffe would this be a matter of blessing.
"...please don't call me father."
And with that, Captain Adrian Amantius marched off to his final duty.
