It was as an apprentice for Giulio Cappellini (who is considered by many to be “the best of the best†in the modern design world), where Mattia Biagi found his future artistic calling. Biagi, a former fashion model from Milan, is a visionary artist who has expanded his passion of fashion and style to reposition mundane household items into exotic, dark and sexy sculpture. Many of Biagi’s pieces, such as the “Tar Bears,†result in a vivid and extreme visual impact.
Biagi’s in Tar pieces transforms the familiar into the surreal. Each object is immersed in a special mixture of tar that Biagi has formulated in his studio. The darkness that covers these familiar objects immortalizes and connects them to a unique concept of aesthetic beauty. Biagi’s idea of the tar collection was born during a visit to the LACMA Tar Pits in Los Angeles, where the mysterious tar bubbles up from the ground. Entranced by the texture, he dipped his shoe into the tar and saw the juxtaposition of ancient and modern life in an epiphany moment. “The Tar collection is an exploration from Biagi’s childhood love of dipping cookies into milk to the grim 21st century political impact that oil has on our everyday lives.Mattia Biagi
• I was born in Italy in 1974 and early on I began a brilliant modeling career that brought me to acquire a first hand experience in the fashion industry, not only with the major fashion houses (Armani, Paul Smith, Gucci, Chanel, Gaultier, Dolce & Gabbana, etch) but also with photographers, stylists, make-up artists and other professionals in the industry.
• After having left a career in modeling, I attended a art- design school (+ 2 years at Brera Academy of Arts) and participated in many internships throughout the major European capitals. Through my personal travel experiences I was opened up to new cultures, freed up from trends and stylistic restrictions. These experiences brought me to dedicate myself to design and art, using the basis acquired through the art-design program and my previous work experience.
• I began to collaborate with noted design firms and participated on art projects.
• My creative and eccentric work has grown remarkably in the past ten years thanks to my fundamental role as creative director for Cappellini; a design firm that has given me the possibility to work expressing my artistic taste with freedom…Cappellini is present in more than 50 museums world wide…
• I like to be inspired and elaborate visual concepts learned through years of experience rather than in books. My passion for photography, fashion, art and architecture has influenced my esthetic taste -- refined but essential.
