~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Well, it's a fact. In the music industry, out of all the departments of a major record label, the smallest is the jazz department. The only department smaller than the jazz department, is the spoken word department. That's me, smaller than little fish but with the attitude and perfect misconception of a big ol' shark.
These "pieces" for lack of a better term were recorded before the new millennium. It started with Warner Jazz, god bless 'em. When Tommy Lipuma heard the finished recording he exclaimed, "What the f*ck am I supposed to do with this?"
...Right? Hey, I don't know why I did this stuff, I just did. When I was a little girl I never once thought, "When I grow up I'm gonna talk over music." No. I wanted to be a fireman. Whatever, here it is. Mind you I am void of aspiration topped off with inspiration and I'm on myspace, it's also something to do. To quote a friend's recent comment, "I find poetry extremely boring." I just want say in all honesty, that I do too.
I do believe however, that judging by the Greats I have been invited and honored to work with, that there must be some validity to it's worth somehow, as the greats are greats for a reason.
I also know from experience, that out every 50 or so people falling asleep during the open mike poetry portion of scheduled readings, there is at least one or two wide eyed vision seekers that would later confess to experiencing some personal revelation from one line of rhyme that would become a case of dropped knowledge that lead to a life or even an ego saved.
I am humble and proud ...blessed to have worked with giants and legendary unknowns all of whom possess the gifts of music skills, insights, and poetry appreciation.
This profile is exclusively for my numerous gifted friends and family in music and in poetry, if anything I am an entrepreneur (spellcheck), a conduit... the following artists, compile the largest department in my own personal company, and some are new myspace friends. Those who know me personally should feel free to post upcoming events and requests: gigs, readings, are you looking for a drummer? A bass player? Singers? Lyricist? Those who don't know me personally, please send me an email first with the flyer you'd like to post, if you don't it might get deleted... sorry.
In closing, I kid you not my friends are the best of the best, with talent undeniable...
Love & Peace,
Yvonne de la Vega
"Jumpstreet" - Single, A&M Records
Music by Herb Alpert
Poem written and performed by Yvonne de la Vega.
Radio re-mix by Brighton Daze
"Many Loves" -poem by Yvonne de la Vega
Arrangement by Ray Manzarek of The Doors for Warner Jazz
It was Ray's brilliance as my producer that suggested we record this piece over Erik Satie's Gnossienne, a classical piece interpreted by Manzarek in jazz undertones. Ray's cascading piano intro reminisces the intro he wrote & recorded for Rider's On The Storm."
Upright Bass - Karl Vincent
Saxophone - Louis Taylor
Percussion - Nirinkar Singh Khalsa
Piano - Ray Manzarek
"Everythink Pink" Poem by Yvonne de la Vega
Arrangement by Ray Manzarek
for Warner Jazz.
This piece was recorded "live" in the studio, the music comp is pure improvisation. I must admit, this particular piece gave way to some stellar moments, it took us to magical places that only occur in the presence of magical people. I think we kept the 3rd take. Ray and I fell in love with this piece. He respected my wordsing & writing and I was humbled by his pefect choices and freedom in improvisation, both symptoms of Greatness. Karl VIncent delivered, as did Louis and Nirinkar. Studio pizza never tasted that good I tell ya. Upright Bass - Karl Vincent
Saxophone - Louis Taylor
Percussion - Nirinkar Singh Khalsa
Piano - Ray Manzarek
"Santiago de Cuba" Virgin Records.
Track from Malcom McLaren's "Round the Outside, 'Round the Outside"
