...Top 10 things *NOT* to do if you want radio airplay... AS POSTED BY KARLIE HUSTLE (on her page but i thought it was pretty cool, and true-- Pele.)
1) DO NOT send/drop off music that is not professionally mixed/mastered. Invest in yourself. Pay for professional recording and engineering services. There's no room for half-stepping in this game. If you can't afford it, save up until you can. You only have one chance to make a first impression. If your stuff sounds like garbage, you're to blame.
2) DO NOT send/drop off music that is not radio edited. It's not the job of the radio station to clean up your foul mouth. Unedited music is of no use to us. We can't play it or we'll lose our license to broadcast. Learn about it.
3) DO NOT ignore constructive criticism or suggestions from others, especially radio/industry people. We do this for a living. If we recommend something to alter/change/remove/re-do, don't become defensive. You asked us to listen to your record for a reason; don't crucify us if we give honest feedback. If you're easily stirred emotionally or hurt by the opinions of others on your craft, this isn't the business for you. Go back to the lab and make a hotter track.
4) DO NOT hate on another local artist that has gotten previous radio station love just because you're not. "How come __________ got spins? His sh*t is wack!". Um, no. Not a good look. Don't throw salt just because you haven't made the right record and built the right relationships yourself. That behavior isn't respected, and anything you say after that will be put on mute.
5) DO NOT show up to a meeting with radio people unprepared. If you have the chance to get in front of a captive audience of people on the inside, you'd better shine. Sell yourself to the room, play your hottest tracks, and listen to the feedback. Showing up high, winging your way through the meeting, acting Hollywood, or behaving with an attitude instead of gratitude will all rub people the wrong way. If the meeting has started and you forgot your music in the car, you've already f*cked yourself in the game.
6) DO NOT say you don't do shows in your hometown (in this case, Phoenix) because there are "too many haters". Having "haters" isn't an excuse to not promote yourself through shows. If you can't rock a show in your own city and you behave like you're too good for your own soil, why should the local station support you?
7) DO NOT assume a hot track is all there is to this game. This game is a combination of personality, command of business affairs, politics, friendship, and talent. If all you can do is rap, you're screwed. Get out now.
8) DO NOT let people who don't know what they are doing be in command of your business affairs. If your manager/representative is a prick and doesn't know how to talk to radio, he or she can spoil important relationships on your behalf.
9) DO NOT make demands, threats or otherwise talk crazy to radio people because you're not getting your way. If you can't take "NO" for an answer, and if you can't take "NO" as ammo to try harder and come back stronger, you're again, in the wrong field. Many of the most successful acts heard "NO" for six years before they got their break.
10) DO NOT assume you deserve anything for any reason. No one has to do anything for you. If you're not willing to put in the necessary work to get the attention of radio in your market (shows, promotion, MySpace hits, press, buzz etc.), that's your bad, not the fault of the radio station. If we go to your MySpace page and you have 200 friends, but you're the G.O.A.T., something isn't going to compute for us. If radio doesn't hear your name being thrown around locally, yet you think you're the hottest thing going, you're doing something wrong. Getting spins at some station in Tennessee is cool, but those don't mean jack if no one in your home city knows who you are.
