DJ Safri

About Me

DJ Safri is one of the leading worldgrooves DJs from the Netherlands. He's a true pioneer in 'Global Beat Fusion', a unique musical blend integrating traditional rhythms and melodies from around the world with cutting edge contemporary club sounds. The result is an irresistable global melting pot, a soundtrack for the globalizing world without borders!Brazilectro, Afrotronic, Latino House, Chicano Hip Hop, Balkan Beats, Asian Underground, Oriental House, North African Chaabi, South African Kwaito, Baile Funk etc... Just about all global dance styles combined in one hot & spicy mix.Safri is specialized in 'Eastern' grooves, an area neglected by most other 'world' DJs. He has a huge knowledge & collection of North African, Oriental, Middle Eastern, Indian & Pakistani dance music. This can be heard on the acclaimed Mystic Grooves parties, of which Safri is co-founder and resident DJ. At the moment, Safri is resident at the GlobaLoca! parties at the SJU, UtrechtBased in Utrecht (NL), Safri performs all over and outside the country. He performs on many different events, ranging from the hottest clubs, famous festivals, special venues to corporate events, private parties and weddings. Some of the music Safri plays is edited or remixed by him, to fit better in his DJ sets. Until now, these special versions remained for his own personal use. In the nearby future a selection of these remixes will be released commercially. Besides remixing, Safri is also recording new music, together with various musicians and vocalists. On stage, he often performs together with dancers and live musicians, playing instruments like sitar, tablas, darbuka and flutes. Background: From early childhood on Safri has been fascinated by music in general, and especially danceable music. While growing up In the severties, his parents fed him a broad mixture of pop, classical, jazz, gipsy, world and other music. Of coarse, his musical taste developed over the years. At the age of 9 he started to buy his own records. While entering the 80ies he focussed primarily on disco & electronic dance music, but he always kept a passion for non-western, especially 'eastern' music. In the mid 1980s he started DJ-ing on local highschool and student parties. Back then he called himself DJ Zero One. Inspired by the rise of House music around 1988 he started producing music himself. Soon after, he released several techno and acid-house records with his 'band' Random XS. These records gained international success, taking him all over Europe and to the USA for live- and DJ performances. He started his own recording studio in his hometown Utrecht where, next to his own productions, he was working on various projects with musicians originally from Turkey, Morocco and Cape Verde.Around 2002 he realized he needed a new challenge. The lack of new developments in techno & house music made him open his mind again for his other musical tastes. After a couple of non-western hit singles by artists like Panjabi MC and Bhangra Knights he realised it was the right time to start off in a completly new direction. In the years before he had built a huge collection of oriental- & asian dance music. It was the right time to take it out to the clubs & stages. He changed his name to DJ Safri. For more info & up-to-date gig list, see: www.djsafri.com .. .. .. .. ..
