In the late seventies and early eighties, South Florida boasted one of the most explosive original rock scenes in the country. It was a time when Rock music was reinventing itself to appeal to a younger, more discriminating audience. New Wave, Punk and other experimental genres were finding a ready audience, and were changing the shape of Rock music forever. And yet, South Florida's prominence in the underground scene remains one of the area's best kept secrets. Bands that included Z-Cars, The Kids, Critical Mass, Charley Pickett, The Cichlids, Slyder, Tight Squeeze and others filled up dozens of local rock venues to the delight of fans. It was an incubator from which some of the biggest names in music and entertainment emerged. For the second annual Sheila Witkin Memorial Concert, these spectacular bands will reunite in honor of Sheila Witkin, a major figure in the evolution and success of South Florida's music scene.
