I am a fool... a Blue Fool. Born in the swamp that is Eastern North Carolina and grew up in Vietnam... Outsider/folk artist..... Printer....
The son of saints i spent much of my childhood in the woods walking creeks and streams... knee deep in the muck of the swamp... sometimes I would hide my clothes in a hollow tree and run naked through the pines, leaping into the air... I truly thought I could almost fly.
In my mid-teens I became rebellious and a worry for my parents sometimes disappearing for days at a time hitchhiking down south and sleeping in junkyards. Taking rides with strange folk and eating green tomatoes from the back of trucks transporting the produce to market. It's a wonder I am not buried in a shallow grave in some thicket in Georgia.
Grew my hair out thanks to the British Invasion which caused a problem with school officials, not to mention my good father. Quit high school about three weeks before graduation and worked on a power line crew digging holes and setting poles. Started smoking dope and eating belladonna then got drafted after being rejected as a volunteer for military service. This pissed me off and I wrote nasty letters to congressmen and the president of the United States... they said they'd let me go but next orders - Viet Nam.
I was in an 8-inch self-propelled Howitzer unit. 1/83rd Artillery. Largest land weapon they had. Helped kill a lot of communists and some women and children. I survived.
Had gotten married before leaving the states. Figured I may not make it so decided to make the gal happy and have someone to write to. Came home to nothing much. A little nuts and feeling like I had lost something. Got divorced and lived on the GI Bill for a couple years doing nothing but bedding women and seeking out the pleasures of many chemicals and natural hallucinatory concoctions. I tried everything there was to offer but never let anything rule me. I saw "God" but I doubt it was really "Him".
Got a job in the printing business in my hometown.
Got married again to a beautiful college girl. Blonde. Smart. Had a great time for a number of years. Had two fine boys. Both good-looking and exceptionally intelligent.
Moved up a bit to a small newspaper in another town nearby. Production "manager"... layout artist, typesetter, printer....
Bought a sailboat after traveling to Florida and being given a ride on a Hobie Cat in the Gulf of Mexico. I was addicted right off. Never had a sailing lesson but took right o it. It felt "natural". Me and wife spent almost every weekend on that boat for a couple years in the summer ....to be continued..... '-)..<
