Hailing from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where the local music scene has flourished for decades--and has recently been brought into the national spotlight by August Burns Red and The Pink Spiders--a band called Open Ravine are showing that there is more to this small town than just the Amish. Ranging in age from 17-21, these young rockers blend the new wave of pop found in All Time Low with the punk styling and energetic live show of Saves the Day. Each member in Open Ravine brings something to the table--whether it is songwriting, creativity, or just an ear for music. Their collective effort creates a sound that is as uplifting as it is distinct.
Open Ravine has come a long way since its birth in 2006 as the music project of front-man Ryan Hickey and guitarist Brad White. What started out as random improvisation has now given way to organized songwriting: fueling the band's ever-maturing sound. The band has gone through a partial line-up change and experienced some rough times that threatened to break it up, but through and through, it has remained focused--making music that is enjoyable not only to fans, but to the band members themselves.
Store in a Cool Place, the band's first EP set to be released in Summer 2009, is filled with poppy melodies, catchy hooks, and exceptional production. The highlight of the EP is the single Talking Backwards, which tells the story of a troubled relationship that eventually ends in a break-up. Lines such as, "I try to speak, but you'll never be the spark that's going to ignite me," reveal the volatility of the relationship, as well as the grudge between the couple--who constantly argue. Store in a Cool Place was Recorded and Produced by Jason Frey (Jason's Place Studio), Mixed by Eric Moon (Jason's Place Studio), and Mastered by Dan Shike (Tone and Volume Mastering); Shike has done work for a number of big-name bands and record labels including DC Talk, Third Day, EMI Records, and Virgin Records.
