DJ SPIN who's real name is Joe was born in Ft. Lauderdale. He started to spin at the age of 13. It all started when Joe was a roller rink rat at the infamous Rollaway Skateway in Davie, Florida. They had built another Rollaway in Pembroke Pines and that is where he got his start. One day while hanging out with Evan, the manager at the rink in Pembroke Pines, Evan didn't feel like spinning and asked Joe if he wanted to. Evan was so impressed by Joe's talent that he went back to the owner of the two rinks and told him all about Joe. Soon he was spinning at both rinks until the one in Pembroke Pines closed and then was the Head DJ at Rollaway in Davie. Joe had done this until that rink finally closed due to the 595 Highway being built which was going to take off some of the property. Within the years of spinning at the roller rink Joe had several DJ names and even had a contest to give him a DJ name. He went by DJ Jazzy J, DJ Jazzy Joe, DJ Joe and so on but none of them ever felt right to him so he just stuck with DJ Joe. Throughout his whole career at Rollaway other roller rink managers and owners in the area would approach him and try to get him to leave Rollaway and go to their rinks. He was bringing in the masses at Rollaway where you could skate and dance. People were driving from Miami, Homestead and West Palm Beach just to hear him spin and come to a packed crowd every night but Joe never left Rollaway and was loyal until the end. After Rollaway closed Joe went on to DJ at Galaxy Skateway in Davie which was our sister rink. It just wasn't the same and they treated him bad cause he was from Rollaway so he soon left and started to get into the club scene.
After working at Spinner's in Hollywood, Florida and a few other clubs he decided to move to Indiana to help out his sister who was sick and elderly mother. Big culture shock from living in South Florida to a little town in Indiana called Kokomo but he did prevail. He landed a job at a nightclub in Kokomo, Indiana called Christo's and once again he turned the club out and brought more people in then any other DJ. People were amazed but his talent and choice of music. At that time Hip Hop wasn't played in the clubs in Indiana cause people were idiots and thought if you played Hip Hop the gangs would take over. Very uneducated people at the time but Joe knew that wasn't true and played it anyway even though no one else would. His mix of Hip Hop, Dance and Miami Bass just amazed the crowd and brought so many people into the club that they couldn't let everyone in. This was a nightly thing when Joe was spinning. The owner decided a year later to close the doors and Joe knew he did what he came to do in Indiana. He decided he needed to move to a big city that he was used to and chose Indianapolis since it was the biggest city in the whole state. After moving to Indy it wasn't long before he landed a job at The Ten Nightclub which at the time was a lesbian club. Of course Joe had never played at a gay or lesbian club but thought he would give it a chance and yet again it brought in the masses with his style of music. Soon it was a nightclub for everyone, Once again the DJ name came up with the people that went to the club and they wanted a better name for him so they all got together and thought of some names but a girl named Trey came up with the best one at the time. She said how about Mixmasterspin? Joe took to the name and for the years to follow was know in Indy as Mixmasterspin. The club was getting more packed every weekend and the same thing happened as did in Kokomo. The had to stop people at the door from coming in due to the capacity being at the max.
Joe stayed their until January 2004 when a friend of his asked him to move to Florida with her for a job. Since he was from their and his sister and mom had passed away already he decided he didn't need to be in Indy anymore cause the only reason he was their to begin with was to take care of his sister and mom but since they had passed away he thought moving back to Florida would make him feel closer to them since he grew up their. The only catch was his friend was moving just south of Orlando to Kissimmee. Joe had only been to Orlando to go to Disney when he was younger but decided he would give it a try. After moving back to Florida Joe had a hard time finding a club to work out since they had no clubs in Kissimmee. You had to go to Orlando to go to a nightclub and they weren't hiring for DJ's. After a few months Joe would take 192 from Kissimmee over to the east coast to go to the beach. 192 ran straight from Kissimmee to Melbourne, Florida and straight to the beach. He noticed a Speedway gas station that was hiring and decided to apply since he had managed one in Indianapolis for about a year on the side. He put in his resume and the next day they called him and hired him on the spot. He started driving everyday from Kissimmee to Melbourne which is about an hour drive to go to work and an hour drive back.
He met a lot of people that came in the store and one of them was a guy named Dennis who was also from the Midwest. He told him about a nightclub down the street that was hiring. When Joe asked about the club Dennis told him it was a gay nightclub. Of course Joe had only worked at the Lesbian club in Indy which turned into a regular Hip Hop club and thought maybe he could do the same with this club. He asked Dennis what kind of music they played and Dennis say Gay Anthem. Joe had never heard of it but decided after a few weeks to mail his resume to the club. After a few weeks he got a phone call to come and audition for the manager and the owner of the club. After doing so they gave him Friday nights. It was almost the same as the club he worked at in Indy except it wasn't busy and it was mostly guys. Joe decided he was going to try and change this. The DJ before him was fired a week after Joe started cause he was playing music nobody knew and was drinking way too much while working. They just had enough of him so let him go and Joe took over Thursday, Friday & Saturday nights. He introduced Hip Hop into the club which was never played before with his style of Dance and Old School. Once again the masses heard about this new DJ and the club started to get busier and busier each week. Soon Joe had done it yet again. What was a 20 person crowd on Thursday night has turned into another capacity night. Friday's picked up as well as Saturday's did and this is where he is currently. The name changed again to DJ SPIN which is what he intends to stick with.
After the manager went into the Navy, Joe took over working on the website at www.coldkegnightclub.com as well as www.myspace.com/coldkegnightclub. He also works in the day to keep the site up and going, fix and maintain the dance floor lights and equipment as well as the Resident DJ on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. The crowd has changed tremendously and has picked up 4 times what it used to be. It is now more of just a regular nightclub where everybody and anybody goes but Joe would say the majority of the crowd is a straight and lesbian crowd than anything else with Thursday being called "Straight Night". Once again Joe has done it again and is very proud of what he has accomplished so far in his life with great expectations for a lot more to come from him. Not only is he currently a Resident DJ at the club he is also a producer, remixer and website designer so if you are ever in the Melbourne, Florida area make sure you go seem at the Cold Keg Nightclub while he is spinning the beats for the masses. Look for bigger things to come from the infamous "DJ SPIN" in the future. He is also available for bookings in and around Florida. To contact DJ SPIN you can email him at [email protected]. DJ SPIN would like to thank everybody for the love and support he has gotten from South Florida to Indiana and now in Central Florida. Show some love and lets keep the masses dancing to DJ SPIN'S beats!
