Words by Natalie HessExit 56 emerged on the music scene in a place most people only hear stories about. N.E.W. A.R.K., NJ not to be confused with New York, NY. “Dirty Jersey’ is full of blood and battle, but it also bred a skilled rap artist. Black Jew is still reppin’ the same spot in South Ward Newark where police shot and killed his home boy Shock 4 over “some bullsh--, but thats nothing new, sh-- happens like that all over the world,†said Black Jew. Growing up in Newark was tough, just like any other inner city community, he recalled.Rapping since he was 10 years old, ironically Black Jew waited years later to hone his craft. “I didnt start writing down lyrics until I seen the movie Hustle and Flow,†says Black Jew. “I mean as soon as I left that movie theater I went home and start writing.†He focuses on the same ideals as Grandmaster Flash—originality and lyrics from experience, yet he has his own twist in the midst of today’s generation by trying to bring back the old 1994-1995 hip-hop feel. Exit 56 produces different vibe songs such as “Stay Strong†that has a deeper meaning and “I’m Ready Ayyeee†that you jam to while you gettin’ to that higher level, whether takin’ sips, hits or sexual poundings.Although Exit 56 isn’t signed, they stays on the grind with the music and is committed to breaking into the industry. “I’m me, that’s it,†said Black Jew. “What inspires me is when I see somebody come from nothing to something.†Black Jew has been compared to many different artists. Some go by his sharp lyrics while others go by his distinct voice in comparing him to Tupac, Common, 50 Cent, Young Jeezy and Gucci Mane. What sets Black Jew apart and can propel his career is his honesty. “I speak my mind and I give my people help and time of need the best way I can says Black Jew.. I’m no killer, but I know who would. I did my 1-2 with the drugs; you name ‘em. I sold them. I’m the type of ni--- that’s going to do what I have to do to survive. I been through a lot of shit, seen a lot of shit and That’s why it comes easy to me. I keep it true.â€For now you can find Black Jew at Exit 56 with the anticipation of putting more than the saying ‘Dirty Jersey’ in people’s mouths
