“Harvesting the FAM is a collaboration of talent that is designed to support all of the Windsor artists who are hustling to make it happen. For the movers and the shakers that bring this city to life. Harvesting the FAM is an attempt to foster a self-sufficient artistic community by providing a venue for artists to showcase their skills and promote their work. Over the years, this city’s gotten a bad rep. They say we’re haters; that we build our artists up only to tear them down. It’s time we changed the tides; less talking, more doing. Come to the festival and show your support.”
-Benjamin Young Hart (F.A.M Co-Creator) The FAM’s Ongoing History
ABOUT:
Harvesting the FAM Festival is an event designed for the promotion and development of Independent Film, Artistic and Musical talents working in any medium or genre. With fair entrance fees for fans and creative talents alike; the festival creates positive and free thinking space for a diverse array of artists to promote, perform and sell their work.
HISTORY:
Harvesting the FAM Festival began as a non for profit event designed to create a large scale artistic outlet for independent Filmmakers, Artists and Musicians of any medium and genre in and from the Windsor-Essex County. The first Festival (Jan.19th/2007) was conceived and headed up by Benjamin Young-Hart and Murad Erzinclioglu, two artists who conceived the idea after working within the area independent art scene for five previous years. The event was funded and run in conjunction with the UWSA, CJAM 91.5FM, Printworx (a local graphic design house), the U of W Motion Picture Production Club, as well as several members of the community and the Filmmakers, Artists and Musicians (FAM) represented in the Festival itself. The event featured twelve films, thirty artists and twenty-one music acts; an unprecedented number of upcoming talents which created an event unlike the city had seen in many years. The Festival was a major success garnering the attention and praise of local media (Windsor Star, CBC, and Upfront Magazine) as well as being recognized by the UWSA Board of Directors as the event that contributed the most to student life in the 2006-2007 school years. The event was also a worthwhile endeavour for all the artists involved, who were able to sell and promote their work at a free, safe, public event.
Organizers continued their commitment to local culture with the PHAM Days event series, which promoted the FAM at seven events over the first three weeks of June. These 'PHAM' events were run in conjunction with CJAM, the Rotary Art in the Park Festival and the Phog Lounge and once again created free positive space for local artists to network within the community.
September 14th, 2007 marked the date of the second Harvesting the FAM Festival. The event featured an unprecedented number of local Independent Filmmakers, Artists and Musicians. Dwarfing the first Festival considerably; the second Festival featured over sixty short films, forty artists and thirty-five musical acts. These local talents took over the University of Windsor's CAW Student Centre and campus for twelve continuous hours. The Festival provided the artists a free and positive space to showcase and sell their work as well as providing the public with twelve hours of non-stop entertainment (and shopping) from some of the greatest talents our fine County had to offer. The Festival was very much for artists, by artists as they were responsible for selling their work and supervising their stations. The festival will also acted as an opportunity for talented individuals to within the community to work together in fostering future collaborations on various artistic projects. The ultimate goal of the festival was to promote local artistic diversity within the Windsor-Essex County.
