About Me

Egg-laying (battery) hens spend their lives in overcrowded wire cages so barren they have no nest which to lay their eggs and so small they can't even flap their wings. Each hen has less living space than the area covered by a single sheet of notebook paper. They will be caged like this all day, every day. Their sensitive upper beaks are cut off with a hot blade or laser to prevent cannibalism caused by intensive overcrowding. After 1-2 years of confinement, their only release is slaughter.
You can help! Visit www.chickenout.ca to find out more.
Don't buy battery eggs.
If you choose to purchase eggs, choose certified organic. In Canada, if the label does not say certified organic, there is no guarantee the eggs are from hens who are not caged. Eggs from certified organic farms are the only ones audited by a third party verification system for animal welfare. In the US, unfortunately your organic standards for chickens are somewhat less than adequate- the most humane option in either country is not to eat eggs at all.
Watch out for misleading labels. Ask retailers to label eggs as "eggs from caged hens." Egg carton labelling is extremely confusing, with misleading terms such as "farm-fresh", "omega-3", "natural", and "vegetarian feed". All these eggs are from caged hens.
Don't eat eggs at all. Transport and slaughter conditions are cruel and are the same for all hens in Canada, whether caged or not. There are lots of egg alernatives, such as ENER-G egg replacer.
