These are some important protocols that SOPS follow and respect before and during an investigation. Guests joining SOPS on investigations are expected to follow the applicable protocols.
An investigation should always be taken seriously. Failure to follow the rules and protocols listed can jeopardize the results of an investigation, as well as reflect negatively on SOPS members.
Pre-Investigation Protocols
- No fees will be charged by SOPS for our private investigations. All expenses are paid for by SOPS members.
- An initial daytime field check (scout) of the location that will be investigated must be done. Ensure any areas of potential danger are noted beforehand and communicated to all team members and guests to avoid any injuries during the investigation.
- Always check your equipment before beginning an investigation to make sure it is in proper working order.
- Always carry a valid ID. A driver’s license or other form of picture ID is sufficient.
Â
Investigation Protocols
- Try to find a rational explanation for everything first and foremost.
- Always obtain permission to be on private property. Obey "No Trespassing" or "Keep Out" signs. If there are signs with hours posted or closed at dusk, then stay out. If during the course of the investigation you come across one of these signs, then you should immediately end the investigation and leave. If you trespass, you risk the chance of being arrested, not to mention what your actions will reflect onto the field of Paranormal Investigation in general.
- Always show respect wherever you are. Harm nothing and no one. Living or dead.
- Never go on an investigation alone. Many of the investigation sites are secluded and if you somehow become injured, nobody will be there to aid you. Also, nobody will be there to confirm what you have experienced. There is greater safety and higher standards of investigative procedures when there are more team members on site.
- The use of drugs and/or alcohol before, during or after any investigation will not be tolerated. You will be asked to leave if you fail to follow this protocol and any evidence that may have been collected by you could be disregarded completely.
- Please do not whisper during an investigation, it may spoil any audio taken. If you do whisper, please acknowledge for the record that you have done so.
- If you feel that you have found or encountered something paranormal, please keep you composure, don’t scream or yell.
- Hold your breath when taking pictures on cold nights. Exhaled breath can appear as a false positive in photos.
- Conducting an outdoor investigation during adverse weather (rain, snow, fog, windy) is not recommended. The weather must always be considered when analyzing any possible evidence.
- Try to refrain from taking pictures while walking. This can stir up dust and show up as dust “orbsâ€.
- Always have an open mind. Keep your sanity and most of all remember humour is a good thing!
This list may be changed or updated at any given time so please keep checking before each investigation for any changes.
