About Me

Share Katherine's Story

I am a professional librarian with more than fifty years experience in academic and large research libraries. I am also a freelance writer and am currently working on two new books, having just published a revision of my autobiography, the first version of which was published in 1992. I was married and have three daughters, but in 1986 I transitioned from male to female and my marriage came to an end. I work at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia and also for the New South Wales Gender Centre, a government-supported agency providing services to people with gender issues. In 1975 I won the First Prize for Individuals in the Masquerade at the World Science Fiction Convention. In 1992 my autobiography, Katherine's Diary, won the Australian Human Rights Award for Non-Fiction.

From the book The day I decided not to commit suicide was one of the saddest days of my life. Having chosen to live I was miserable and apprehensive, because it meant that I had decided by default that despite having been born male I was going to live the rest of my life as a woman. I knew that this would be a trauma for my children, who had no idea that I was transgendered, and an agony for my wife. I knew that there would be grief, and attempts to explain, and feelings of betrayal. I had to find the right words to tell the children that although they might no longer have a conventional father, they would always have two loving parents.

My Interests

I play chess, I sail (I have a number of small sailboats, and two larger ones, an eighteen foot trailer sailer and a twenty-two foot fixed keel offshore sloop), and I write.

I'd like to meet:

I have no driving urge to meet anyone, as my time is well filled and I meet people all the time, without even trying. It is nice to renew friendships with people I have known in the past, particularly during my five years of residence in the United States (1968-1973).

Music:

Mostly classical, Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Vivaldi etc. but I also enjoy cool jazz (e.g. Brubeck) and Dixie.

Movies:

I'm very eclectic with my taste in movies. I enjoy comedies and action movies, romances and animations (some), pirate movies and westerns.

Television:

I loved the West Wing, and enjoy House MD and Boston Legal. Apart from that I am a news junkie and love documentaries (when they are well filmed and not overwhelmed with loud and inappropriate music).

Books:

Very eclectic with books, too. I have a personal collection of around 7,000 books, many of which I have bought to help me with the books I am writing and other projects (such as a report on violence against the transgendered and strategies to prevent that violence).

Heroes:

"Ordinary" people who refuse to take the easy way out by "not getting involved".
