About Me

Matt specializes in performing and composing high-energy experimental music. His unique improvisational guitar style developed from many years of rock performance, formal music composition, and jazz studies. Primary influences include Hendrix, late Coltrane, Miles psychedelic 70s era, and avant-garde contemporary composers such as Xenakis and Penderecki. Although he has considerable technique in modern guitar idioms, he is constantly seeking new sonic territories for exploration. He is known to randomly detune the guitar during a performance, creating unpredictable tonal environments. Slides and e-bow devices add expressive variation. While he is passionate about such experimentation, he also plays thematically or melodically when the mood strikes. Matt started in garage bands at 16, later added jazz and classical guitar styles, and then focused on composition culminating in a Masters from Princeton University. He has created six cd's of original music and collaborated with film and video artists. Various works have been presented nationally and internationally. Stage experience includes: regional rock tours in Florida, punk rock shows, jazz groups, and other serious modern composed music performances such as the Bang On A Can festival at Lincoln Center in New York.
