About Me

The phrase “martial arts” literally translates as “to stop the spear”. This means both stopping “the spear” of your own ego as well as “the spear” of your attacker. Combining the principles of both hard and soft movement, internal and external development, Goju becomes a martial path or “way”: a way to self-mastery. Goju builds on a core of traditional forms (fighting or breathing patterns). Adding partner drills dealing with confrontational energy, flowing movement, and spontaneous response enhances personal development and allows each student to grow individually in the “way”. Classes are conducted in a non-competitive atmosphere, building trust between training partners, enhancing the learning process, and reducing the risk of injury. A 1.5-hour class typically consists of 30-40 minutes of warm-ups and stretches, with the remainder of the class consisting of basic techniques, drills, forms practice, sparring, weapons etc… Redirection of force and countering to vital areas, rather than force against force, is the orientation. Goju does not necessarily teach a specific response to a specific situation, but it does teach principles of movement which can be applied in a variety of situations. Appropriate spontaneous action is the goal... ..
