Norchestra

About Me

Norchestra began playing together 1999, when the members met in the music department at the Skeisvang High School. At this time, when composer and multi-instrumentalist Alf Wilhelm Lundberg composed "Moon and Sun, Clouds and Wind", the concept of mixing through-composed classical composition with fresh, energetic and spontanious improvisation was born. We had our concert debut in the end of 2000, when we played a 2-hour concert in Festiviteten, Haugesund's Grand Concert Hall. In the next years we continued to have concerts in concert halls on the west coast of Norway, close to the town of our origins, Haugesund. After many concerts and great development as a band and as individual musicians, we got an offer to be the resident band at the local jazzclub "To Glass". This was a great opportunity for the band to play many gigs and try to develope a unique sound as a group. Finally, in April 2007, the day after our debut-concert in Oslo at Cosmopolite we recorded our debut album 21-22 of April in Rainbow Studio with Jan Erik Kongshaug. Despite having only one and a half day to record the album, the recording session turned out to be great, offering us record-contracts with several jazzlabels in Norway. We are now very happy that we signed with Karl Seglem's label NorCD, he has given us a great start by publishing and doing promo for our debut cd "Norchestra", that was released the 1st of February. And the reviews have all been astonishing, everyone giving a score with 5 out of 6, and describing us as "something really unique" and as a "remarkable debut".We're very happy to present you our debut cd, in which we all are very satisfied with. It furfills our initial vision to merge together classical music and jazz. We also hope that you will enjoy our debut cd!All the best,Norchestra

Sounds Like: As Terje Mosnes, jazz-journalist in Dagbladet, one of Norway's major newspapers said:"In his own compositions, based on modern jazz traditions as well as the classical modernism of the last century, Lundberg leads the trio from highlight to highlight, sometimes sounding like something Egberto Gismonti could have done, and sometimes as if Esbjörn Svensson Trio or The Bad Plus would be in action with a strict Shostakovich on their backs. But first and foremost, Norchestra presents itself as Norchestra and immediately steps to the forefront among contemporary Norwegian jazz ensembles."
