Message from the President
To all fellow Ruggers,
The 2007 – 2008 season will mark the 30th year of competition for the Baton Rouge Rugby Football Club. A little perspective is in order here. There were no rugby clubs to speak of anywhere south of the Washington, DC area before 1966. The 1970’s saw the largest expansion to date in US rugby with hundreds of clubs, including our own, forming in the American South during that period. Sadly, many of them no longer exist. The Baton Rouge RFC, however, is strong both on and off the pitch. That continuity is a testament to our players and coaches, both past and present, families, friends and sponsors.
Coach Brad Hudson took over the team and just finsihed his first season with Baton Rouge. We look forward to having him back for next season along with Jim Brugh. We have a strong nucleus of veteran players returning from last year as well as some very exciting newcomers and we look to improve upon our respectable performances over the past several seasons. The task before us is not an easy one. The Texas Rugby Union has created an extremely competitive Division II that includes our perennial rivals Shreveport and the Austin Huns along with Fort Worth, San Antonio and the Dallas Reds. We will also face several of the finest Division I clubs in the US in the Austin Blacks, the Dallas Harlequins, The Woodlands and the Houston Athletic Rugby Club. I think it is no exaggeration to say the upcoming season will be the most challenging ever for this group of players and coaches.
Fortunately for us, our sport is rugby and in rugby, the chief determinants of success are courage and commitment. If we simply take the standard we have set for ourselves over the past two years as a base and improve on the few things that need improving, then our 30th season should be one of the most memorable in the club’s history.
Regards,
President
