Gatewood was born in Ogg Hall circa 1994 when Andy and Barry named their embryonic pop band for their favorite high school teacher. A year later they came into their own when Lindsi joined them on drums.
After several false starts they found themselves playing Madison house parties as well as clubs like The Chamber and their beloved O'Cays Corral, opening for the likes of Coolhand Band, Fez Petting Zoo, the Godrays and others. When not on stage they most certainly heckled Junior High to just "play some rock n roll."
Gatewood's simple two-minute pop songs dedicated to unrequited crushes were dismissed as "undeniably amateurish" by one critic, who clearly missed the point. Often out of tune, they instead took heart from the advice of music hero, Maki's Tim Buckley, who told them "we all miss notes, we don't miss energy."
In spring 1997 they released the cassette-only album This is Where Things Get Strange to rave review.
Gatewood broke up the next spring, not so much broken hearted as giggling madly at impending adulthood. Andy, Barry and Lindsi remain the fastest of friends to this day. Awww.
