About Me

What are these songs about? Well, that’s a difficult question, because they are almost indistinguishable from myself, as intimate as a leaf lifted from my skin and as close as my shadow. Elusive as they are, many of my songs and compositions arrive spontaneously through dreams. I often wake singing and scrambling for a notepad and guitar. Others tug insistently at my hem during waking hours until I submit and write them out of me in the evenings. There is a certain amount of catharsis in the writing and a cruel joy at pressing my weakest points - some of my most difficult memories - and finding a shining song between the pain. You may pick up that my songs are very visual and as an artist specialising in photography and film, I can see a strong link between the two disciplines, in which each enhances the other.
’Deep Sleep Dreaming’ and ’Muse’ are unusual for me, as they are solo recording projects, arranged, recorded, performed and produced mainly by myself as a part of my own learning of studio recording processes. Starting as a complete beginner and slowly learning how to manipulate sound and compositions through Cubase has been a real eye-opener and incredibly different from recording on the old Fostex four-track I started out on in 1998! I love the freedom and the infinite changes and effects you can add to sounds and I often spend any spare time I have locked away in the sound studio lost in creating. It’s not easy though and I’m still working towards achieving what I ’hear’ in my head when I’m playing my songs. The joy of it is that after just nine months of using Cubase intermitently I am finally beginning to hear a glimmer of what I’m striving for! And I have made a vow only to record when the ’mood passes through me’ - to keep what I do honest and meaningful.
Involved in the recording project are Les Wilson - an oustanding, empathic drummer and work by Kat Parker - double bass player extraordinaire and Nick Wilson - a superbly sensitive guitarist (and technical wizard). I have been working with all three for a number of years and they are close friends as well as top musicians who I owe a great deal to. They are as much a part of this music as I am, having arranged and forged the sound from many rehearsals and musical moments of hilarity and inspiration! With a portfolio of many original songs and countless other musical compositions from what now must be over a decade of writing, I hope to soon bring many more of these precious offerings to the light to be enjoyed. Please comment and leave a ’hello’! it’s great to meet other musicians through the site.
