About Me

Mister Voodoo, born Agu Obiakor, Jr. to a Nigerian man and American woman in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. Raised and grown by the streets of Fort Greene and Bed-Stuy. First introduced to hip hop in junior high where me, Black Mike from L.G. (that's Lafayette Gardens Housing Projects), Light Bulb aka Tony Rome aka "Dennis", my man Mase from De La Soul (who is actually from Brooklyn), Telo (notorious dude from Marcy Projects- RIP), and many others from our little crew would listen to old school tapes from uptown. This was the era when crews like Cold Crush, Fantastic Freaks, Force MC's and others was doing their thing. Didn't actually wanna rap till I heard the Treacherous Three take it to another level of lyricism with "Gotta Rock". The way they flipped vocab and flow bugged me out and this was before Rakim. I was a little shorty then and that's where it began. I met up with the founding members of NE which is Dante, Intimidator, Howie Smalls, G Blast, and L Swift in the late 80's to early 90's and it was a wrap from there. Under the tutelege of Charlemagne, who is one of the most slept on producers of the game and arguably one of the best, we honed our skills till they were razor sharp. That's when Fortress came into the picture around 1994 and we put out the underground classic "Lyrical Tactics." By 1996, Mister Voodoo and his crew Natural Elements had become a major force in the NY underground scene receieving widespread critical acclaim and general love from underground heads alike. So much so that Mister Voodoo was given one of the only "lyricists of the month" titles given to an underground, technically unsigned artist in the Source magazine when that was only being awarded to hip hop's lyrical elite. This came with the release of my second underground classic "Lyrical Tactics" and the ground breaking "SHINE." In 1999, Natural Elements which scaled down to Mister Voodoo, L-Swift and newly arrived A-Butta signed to Tommy Boy and in 2000 put out "2 Tons" and "Living It Up." Although well received we were cursed with a label that basically had no idea, just clueless on how to deal with a talented group that was minus the bullshit gimmicks and cliches of the industry. After being shelved for almost a year, we seeked to be released and went our seperate ways. Now Mister Voodooo stands alone, one of the last vestiges of that era about to bring in a New Era. Now NE stands for not just Natural Elements but New Era. This rap shit is dead it's time for a god mc to breathe life back into it. I ain't the saviour. I more like John the Baptist making the way, and preparing yall for him. This ain't about a bunch of d--k riding, it's about a real movement and that's what myself and partner LDR are about . So peep this and hope you like.
