Anna Sullivan approaches dance from an anthropological point of view and thus uses dance to analyze modern social concerns much like a scientist might…a mad scientist that is.
Anna received a Bachelor of Specialized Studies degree from Ohio University in Dance Anthropology in 2003. A year later, Anna created Anatomical Scenario Movement Theater.
In all of Anna’s work, emotional behavior and civil conventions are playfully personified and then super-magnified to reveal the excessive dementia suffered by millions of people who unconsciously accept--and even promote as “normal” ways of life--cultural scenarios that are clearly personally and socially psychopathic in nature.
During the last four years Anna has composed four evening-length dance concerts. The first two concerts premiered at the First and Second Annual Columbus Fringe Festival. The third concert, Anna and The Annadroids: The Robots’ Dream Tour, preimered at the Tenth Annual New York International Fringe Festival in 2006. It was enthusiastically received by critics and audiences alike. Tomi Tsunoda, from NYtheater.com, called Anna’s choreography “extremely exciting and dynamic;” and NewYorkMetro.com reporter Alicia Zuckerman picked Anatomical Scenario’s show as the best dance-related production entered in that year’s festival!
In January 2007, Anna received a grant through the GCAC, Greater Columbus Arts Council, to present Anna and The Annadroids: The Robots’ Emancipation Party at Skully’s Music Diner.
In May of 2007 Anna recieved a project grant through the Greater Columbus Arts Council for the creation of her fourth evening length concert titled Anna and The Annadroids: Clone Zone. This production was presented at the Eleventh Annual New York International Fringe Festival, as a work in progress, and then premiered in Columbus in January 2008. Most recently Anna recieved the Greater Columbus Arts Council 2008 Artistic Excellence Award for her production of Anna and The Annadroids: Clone Zone.
Building on this success, Anna is encouraged to continue tapping directly into synaptic nerve endings, siphoning off both thoughts and passions at their very source, and transfiguring them into dance works that trigger minds and feelings from the top of our intuition to the bottom of our collective consciousness.
