Alicia began her musical studies on the violin at the age of 8, but it was later in life that she found singing jazz to be her true passion. While growing up outside of Boston, MA, she was exposed to jazz at an early age by her mother, who sang with a local jazz group. Then, while living in Washington, DC on her own, Alicia decided to study voice seriously. Soon enough, she was singing weekly with her teacher’s funk band, performing her then mainly R&B and soul repertoire. During this time, Alicia began studying jazz as well and the first to inspire her on this path was the great Billie Holiday – an influence that can still be heard in Alicia’s music today.
Most recently, Alicia held a 2-year singing engagement with her trio at Big Apple Jazz, in Harlem. Alicia started out in NYC in 2004, working as a waitress at Birdland where she performed at the “Cast Parties†and had to opportunity to listen to and meet the great musicians who played at the club on a nightly basis – some of whom she eventually performed with. Since then, she has appeared at various NYC venues, including the Nuyorican Poet’s Café, The Cotton Club, and Lenox Lounge. Alicia is presently continuing to develop her craft through studying with the legendary Barry Harris.
