Oftentimes when an artist creates a hit in a group environment, it can be difficult for them to break out to do their own thing. Of course there are plenty of success stories throughout music’s history; however Hip Hop artists transitioning from group to solo artist seem to have a lot of challenges to overcome. J-Money knows the struggles of both working alone and in a group. His 2006 duo effort with Cadillac Don, Look At Me, spawned the hit “Peanut Butter & Jelly,” however in 2008, J-Money is back in the solo game. His new single “I’M BALLIN” featuring Rick Ross is in the streets, and his upcoming album (My Life”Check Me Out”) will be released under Fontana Distribution and 35*35 Entertainment.
J-Money was born in Crawford , Mississippi, a city where everybody knows everybody. He grew up in a single parent home with a little brother, with a variety of music like Blues, R&B and Hip Hop surrounding him. After finishing high school, he attended college with a full scholarship for baseball. He pursued professional baseball, but an unfortunate injury sidelined that 95 miles-per-hour fast ball. Hip Hop soon became the focal point of his life.
Hustling and Hip Hop all day was J-Money’s job. He started out with a local group called the Crawford Boys, which signed with NBA superstar Clarence Weatherspoon’s budding 35*35 Entertainment label. While he enjoyed his time with the group, J-Money decided to pursue a career as a solo artist. As he began recording with 35*35’s blessing, his friend Cadillac Don introduced J-Money to producer Big Fruit.
They began working on J-Money’s first single “Peanut Butter and Jelly,” and after asking Cadillac Don to do a verse on the track, the chemistry was undeniable. Taking Big Fruit’s advice, they decided to become a duo, and began recording in Atlanta. 35*35 Entertainment got Cadillac Don & J-Money a deal with Asylum and Warner Music Group for their 2006 debut album Look At Me. The song “Peanut Butter and Jelly” went gold on ringtone sales, and created quite a buzz with the video’s several-week run on BET’s Rap City.
After the release and promotion of their debut album, Cadillac Don decided to strike out on his own. J-Money talked with the 35*35 Entertainment team, and they decided to get behind J-Money’s goal of a solo project. The upcoming album features beats from producers C. Sharp and Big Fruit, and guest appearances from Jim Jones, Rick Ross, Yo Gotti, Slim Thug, 8 Ball & MJG, Cadillac Don, Lil Boosie, Tremble, Jackie-O and more. “Creatively I make a lot of music for the ladies to keep them happy,” explains J-Money. “They’re a big part of Hip Hop’s success right now. I do street music but it’s not too rough, just real.”
Currently, J-Money’s single featuring Rick Ross “I’M BALLIN” is catching a good buzz. The single leading into his new album My Life “Check Me Out” which will be released under Fontana Distribution, a release date has not been determined. J-Money does have some favorite tracks so far. “My song with Yo Gotti is called ‘Street Boy’ - that’s for the streets and I got ‘Give Her To Me’ which is going to be a real big single for the ladies.”
While performing from state to state, J-Money realized that people want a great performance. He has made it his mission to bring a high energy stage show, offering various musical statements and interactive fun with the audience. His motivation is to maintain longevity in the game and follow in the footsteps of those who have been successful before him. In keeping with the philosophy “if you don’t grind you won’t shine in anything,” J-Money recognizes that hard work must pair with the connection he has with his fans. “With this album, people are going to know that J-Money speaks real. I’m a humble guy and I love my fans.”
