About Me

Born in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, in 1981 but raised in nearby Kampong Speu province, rapper Khmer Thug got the cultural backbone he'd need to become a star (as his last name ..Dara..). Exposed by his parents, he became a fan of Khmer opera ( La-Khaon Bassac, A Yay Chhlong Chhley and Yi Ke). Then later, young Monine Dara flew to France where he studied the language and new concept of music art. After 3 years, Monine returned to Phnom Penh where he found himself involving with gangs and violence. The Country was then full of corruption and injustice. In 2000, his head crew TKC (Toul Kok Clan) was attacked by 85 Cambodian Freedom Fighters known as CFF; Monine escaped death while most of his crew didn't have the chance. CFF were in alleged plot to overthrown Cambodian Government and potentially ready to attack the Military head quarters in Phnom Penh but were arrested or killed by military police later that same day. Khmer thug found another path to create his own style of music, one that mixed the rhythmic sounds of hip-hop and Khmer traditional music. Lyric-wise, he combined hip '80s slang with current slang and tales of barrio life. Coming to Lowell, United States, Khmer thug is signed by a local producer and recorded his songs at Kreative Sound studio, his first album is called ..Confession.., and the second ..The Biggest Mistake.. where he kicked off his relationship with the music composer Vinii Ratana, and featured with many local and international underground rappers from France, Cambodia and Puerto Rico.
