I am a doctoral student at Fielding Graduate University majoring in human and organizational development. I am currently writing a book and building an online community called Sewing Social Worlds... http://www.sewingsocialworlds.com This site is partially under construction. The Shrinking planet discussion forum as well as Our Global Voices are completed parts of the community and I would like for you to visit them. http://theshrinkingplanet.hqforums.com and http://www.ourglobalvoices.comThis myspace page was just that in the beginning...a myspace page. Then something changed; I put my spirit into this page and created a culture I would have built when I was a teenager in Jackson Heights, Queens NY. I was born and raised in NY, a place where my childhood was filled with a melting pot of European-American cultures. My community was not multi-racial, but it sure was multicultural. Our community consisted of German, Irish and Italian families that practiced Catholicism and Russian and Polish families that practiced Judaism. That was about it. We had lil Italy in Italian Corona and next to us was black Corona where the region was predominantly black. To the other side of us was a Hispanic neighborhood. We were quite segregated. We grew up in a time when segregation was becoming history, however; we still stuck with our own.We were rockers and we wore bandanas which at the time indicated we were rockers. Today you can get shot for wearing a bandana if the color represents a specific gang. Also, today, you can still find kids who prefer to keep the company of people of the same race and culture, but today it is different. I have kids, so I have been able to watch the new generation react to immigration. Today, kids do not have to leave their communities to find people of different races and so forth. They can simply look next door, or at the community pool or in the supermarket and they will find people of all races and colors.I would imagine this makes it very hard for kids today. It seems almost natural for people to be territorial and this must be harder to do when many different people groups live together as opposed to living in separate communities (neighborhoods) as we did when we were younger. The bottom line is that we were not given the tools to understand people of such diversity. Not our generation or the kid's generation. True, some people do not have a problem tolerating people of difference, but how many people absolutely without doubt embrace and accept people that are different in appearance as well as culture. The social worlds were woven, each world with different cultures and customs. Each of these worlds have personal rules and leaders. Each world holds generations of what to dos and what not to dos that have followed from their ancestors graves. These are social worlds and somehow some people believe that we can take these worlds and put them together without sewing the seams. These people are wrong, and this is why I am building the Sewing Social Worlds website, so that we can study these worlds and find common ground. Please join Sewing Social Worlds in order to read articles, add culture, discuss issues in the forums and so forth. The community is being built but is available and published despite the construction because I want people to sew these worlds with me. In other words, I need you and your stories. Thank you.
