Karl has been involved in the recording industry from an early age.
Karl began playing guitar when he was 8 and studied classical cello for 6 years from the age of 9. His first studio recording experience was at age 10 when he played cello on a track called ‘Mahinaarangi’ written for his god-sister Mahinaarangi and was released on the album ‘Blak Katz Go Gambling’. His own first release was ‘He Taonga' in 1990 with a recording grant from Puatatangi. After spending a year with Kahurangi Maori Dance Theatre as a musician he left Hastings to study music for three years at Whitireia Polytech in Porirua. He graduated with an Advanced Certificate of Rock and Jazz styles and a Diploma in Commercial Music.
A deep passion for his polynesian heritage is reflected in the due diligence Karl applies to this area of research. He loves to draw upon these natural influences, stories and thought processes to compose music that seamlessly incorporates the past into the present. A talented exponent of Taonga Puoro o Aotearoa and creates sounds with them that are as unique as his abilities.
Karl has worked in a number of bands over the years covering just about every genre of music imaginable and is competent in delivering jazz fusion, blues, afro cuban / latin, pop, celtic, classical, rock, folk, techno, electronica, reggae, cultural or whatever type of music is required.
One of the enlightening moments of Karls music career was the opportunity to perform at the first Polynesian music festival in 1993 in Rarotonga, This opened his eyes to the musical richness in his own ancestry and heritage. He descends from a line of composers and musicians and his creative talents are not just limited to music. Karl was appointed a Kai Turuki by Dr Rangimarie Turuki Rose Pere and is qualified to deliver the two day introductory Te Wheke wananga - a model for total well being.
