Improvisations for "Gluisop"
The Gluisop is a conventional saxophone that has been modified with a sophisticated array of gesture capturing sensors. The sensor data is then mapped via computer to software that modifies the sound as you play. The software is generated in an open architecture computer language [Max/MSP] and is extremely versatile and powerful. The sensor data is directed to the computer over a conventional Internet protocol, which is very fast and capable of extreme accuracy, wireless and network transmission.

This is ReMOVE. David Tolley and Ted Vining have been playing free improvised music since the late 1950's. Playing with them in 2005 was revolutionary, liberating and totally inspiring. We recorded 3 cds. Message me for more info on how to get hold of these recordings.

Music reflects what I've been checking out and playing, and how I feel at any moment.
I studied saxophone in Melbourne with Dr Peter Clinch in the late 70's while studying at Melbourne State College, then spent a few months in New York checking out the music and taking a few lessons. Carmine Caruso was enlightening, and Harold Bennett really showed me how to practise. I also did a summer school at Eastman in jazz improvisation and composition.
Since the early 1980s I've has been involved in numerous jazz groups, classical and avant-guarde music ensembles, and commercial music projects including over 40 professional theatre productions, recordings for film, television and major events including AFL Grand Finals and the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, and live performances with international artists including Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, Billy Cobham and Randy Brecker.
I've performed throughout Australia, and across Europe, the United States, Japan and China with a number of leading Australian ensembles including the Australian Art Orchestra, Elision Ensemble, and the Peter Clinch Saxophone Quartet.
Highlights amongst all this include performing classical saxophone concertos with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, jamming on-stage with Stevie Wonder and his band, gigs in Melbourne with drummer Billy Cobham. and touring to Ngukurr in Arnhem Land with the Australian Art Orchestra to immerse in indigenous culture and music.
I've had the pleasure of playing with some incredible Australian artists including Paul Grabowski, Scott Tinkler, Julien Wilson, Joe Chindamo, Doug DeVries, Mal Webb, Christine Sullivan, Archie Roach and Ruby Hunter, Tommy Emmanuel, David Jones and Nigel McClean.
I've also lead a number of groups playing jazz standards and original music at local venues and festivals.
What I really love is the improvisational collaborations I share with musicians like Ren Walters, David Tolley, Niko Schauble, Adrian Sherriff, Ted Vining and Adam Simmons.
I also spend a lot of time teaching in schools, tafe colleges, and privately, with students ranging from beginner to post-tertiary level. I currently teach at NMIT, Macleod College, Melbourne Girls College, and the Victorian College of the Arts.
