About Me

Sky Pilots began in late 2004 when bass player Mike Chopko replied to drummer Bill French’s Craigslist bandmate plea. During their first encounter, Mike put forth his rock vision. He described a master plan so epic, so catastrophic, so totally outrageous, that Bill could return only an intrigued, bewildered stare.

Sky Pilots were born.

A month later guitar player Pat Wachter, a sprite-like fixture of Mike’s past back east, arrived in San Francisco to boozy fanfare and many a slow-cooked pork shoulder. The three started playing shows and recording right away. They practiced relentlessly, wrote songs at a feverish pace, played shows, and recorded a first album. They toured The East Coast to support it. They returned to San Francisco for more shows and then toured The West. They continued to play within and outside their fair city’s walls. And they continued to write songs, which became deeper, wider, more intricate, more unhinged.

Sky Pilots arose.

In February and March of 2007, they recorded their second full length LP, Enjoy a Day Off, with Tim Green at Louder Studios. This album finds the band more in tune with their surroundings. The cover depicts an Arcadian oasis centered amidst urban sprawl, glowing in late afternoon sunlight. All eight tracks sonically manifest this physical setting. The songs display angular, frenetic excitability, but also capture radiant, organic tranquility. Tim Green’s deft studio treatment magnifies the warm, yet aggressive aural textures of Pilots’ spry performances. Though inspired equally by psychedelic, progressive, and post-punk bands, this album is no throwback. This is super-audible music for now and for the future.

“The sheer depth of Sky Pilots’ bag of compositional attacks renders repetition nearly impossible,” says West Coast Performer magazine. San Francisco publication The Bay Bridged said: “Sky Pilots combine muscular rhythm sections with angular guitar chime for a sound that’s at once aggressive and expansive.”

Sky Pilots begin their tour of the Midwest and East Coast on October 8, 2007 in Minneapolis. For three weeks they’ll wind through the Great Lakes toward the Eastern Seaboard and southward. Highlights include The Empty Bottle in Chicago, three shows in New England and New York with Boston’s Township and a night in Philadelphia with Austin’s The Octopus Project.
