On May 14 1985, a luxury cruiser, packed with wealthy war heroes and gorgeous golddiggers, sunk outside the coast of Jahalbrat. Days later, a group of fifteen survivors were washed ashore the island of Casabo, an - at the time - totally unexplored tropical paradise. The survivors largely consisted of members of the ship's orchestra, who'd increased their chances of survival by clinging on to such commodities as the double bass or the grand piano.
Finally safe from the treacherous waters of Jahalbrat, they built, what would become, their home for the next 21 years. A couple of years on and the group had now grown to include some twenty people, thanks to the presence of a few female choir girls.
The children would play in the sand and soon they would even make great adventures of their own. One of these days, they found an old guitar floating in the water. Amazed by their new discovery, they quickly and aptly began learning the basics of rock 'n' roll. With the help from their monkey friends, a flash of lightning, some sea shells and a couple of thorns from the Jiggy Wiggy tree, they made their own island-tech stereo. Now they could also enjoy and be inspired by the exquisite record collection saved from the ship break.
By then, Alex, Johan, Albin, Joakim and Martin, as were the names of the children, were having their own grooving jungle band and would use everything they found as instruments. Using hair from the their fathers' backs, they would make bass strings. This was, as we know it, the incarnation of Vikunja. The name of the band was actually derived from their favourite dish, the Vikunja llama, which had been an endless source of food for the island residents. There must have been a million of those animals walking around the island.
Years went by and with the band rehearsing their magical music everyday, their parents' (and the indigenous animals') longing to be rescued grew more and more desperate. One sunny day, the moment finally arrived, when Captain Benjamin and his sidekick, Freddy the Kid, in the search of a holiday retreat for themselves and their fabulous staff, reached the island of Casabo. So, on that day (November 28 of 2006 to be precise), the band and their parents were saved and returned to the cold, dark Sweden.
With their debut single "Some People" (soon to be released) the band is now prepared to take on, and finally meet, the world they never knew...
Er... OK, maybe not.
After watching a live dvd of Ziggy Stardust, at the age of 15, Alex and Johan decided to start a band of their own. Skipping classes to write songs and rehearsing in a garage, the band to become Vikunja evolved.
