About Me

BIOGRAPHY -“I see a lot of music come through here, and Kieran’s album doesn’t just accent a mood, it creates it!” Dale Becker, The Firehouse Recording Studio. Kieran Leigh is the queen of quirk. She knows how to communicate lyrically and melodically with her sultry vocals and laid back rasp reminiscent of Beck, Vedder, and Crow blended into one, while her lyrics are wrought with issues. At times it is eccentrically offbeat and completely consuming, drudging the bottom of internal emotions, only to lift us back up to a point of inspiration. With its complicated harmonies, unusual choices in lead instrumentation, and unique choruses, this album measures strongly against established musical artists.Leigh’s collection of songs offers something both for listeners of pop-simple, and indie-elite audiences. The musicality on her new album, Under the Big Top, is worth its weight in gold, as it is predominantly accompanied by world class musicians such as Steely Dan’s, Ricky Lawson, Ian Walker, Aarron Sterling and keyboardist, Patrick Warren, who not only contributed to the works of The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Fiona Apple, and Springsteen, but recently toured with Tom Waits.Kieran’s songs create vivid images, not only speaking to the longing for love, but recreate somewhat bizarre auditory snippets captured during sleep. While many of her songs on Under The Big Top fall neatly into the genre of rock, upon closer examination, this is not music for the simple. Each track assumes its own sonic identity, and what unites the fifteen songs is Leigh’s poignant honesty.Q- "Have you enjoyed the making of this album? It's got a fantastic quality, by the way. I love the cello's."A- “Why, thank you. Um, yeah. It's been an incredible learning experience that made me laugh and cry and everything in between. I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I started this particular effort, and it's a wonder to me that I have any hair on my head left after nearly pulling it out during the making of this effort. All I knew was that I had to make these songs.”Q - "I can't help but notice that talent runs in your family. One of your brothers is Director Peter Segal."A- "Ouch, I'm not sure he wants the world to know that. But, yes."Q- "Oh, really? Why not?"A - "Kidding, really. But, I think to him I am his, sort of, his screw up younger sister, ya know? The absolute black sheep. The type you just want to put in a closet with tape on her mouth and make disappear."Q - "Has he heard the album?"A - "Oh yeah. He likes it, though he's more a Frank Sinatra kinda guy. We're evidence of just how different siblings can be, albeit we are both very creative individuals. I'm the third of four, so, my other sib's have heard it as well, and, from what I can tell, they like it, too. Music is so personal and subjective, it's just not for everyone, and just because we're all blood, doesn't necessarily mean we'll like one another's work. What's important is that we do support one another's endeavors. We feel our creative works need to stand on its own. If merit worthy, then, it will gain recognition. So, my being his sister isn't going to make anyone like my songs anymore than if I weren't. Music has to move you, make you feel something."Please visit her official website at www.kieranleighmusic.com. Influences: Off the top of my head... let's go into the way back machine and start when I was five; Simon and Garfunkel. The first song that made an impression on me was Cecilia - the percussion and harmonies - Even at five I understood that his girlfriend was cheating on him, "when I come back to bed, someone's taken my place. cecilia, you're breaking my heart, you're shaking my confidence daily." Beotch! I used to stare at the album cover longingly thinking that Paul Simon's name was Garfunkel. I wanted to take away his pain, fix him, and oh, how I loved him so. But, I remember thinking, "He should change his last name - Garfunkel?" The next song I loved was Ben by The Jackson Five... only Michael Jackson can find inspiration in a rat. The Beatles are brilliant, Glenn Miller Band, Les Paul and Mary Ford, Mountain Music of the 1800's, Folk music, bluegrass, 70's rock and roll man, Gospel, Gershwin, Bowie, Bach, Mozart, Neil Finn, Jeff Buckley, Stephan Stills, CSN, and sometimes Y. I'm in a Y phase right now. It only took me fifteen years to get past his voice. He's quite the lyricist. Radiohead, Thom, Brad Meldhau, Bjork, Zep, Beck, Rush, MMW, Phish, Elton John, Nina Simone, Maxine Sullivan, Edith Piaff, Charlie Parker, Queen, Queens Of The Stone Age, Beach Boys' Smile, must we go on??? Okay, my 6th grade music teacher Mr. Peck, my 7th grade English teacher Mr. Kaiser, Dylan Thomas, Dante Rossetti, my friends and family, most of my ex's, Jon Brion, my life experiences, my senses, your senses, Kahlil Gibran, Wayne Dyer, The Great Tao, Buddha, the peddler on the corner, and the supreme being of this big and cool universe.

So, just when I thought the album was done, it came undone. The mix is not up to snuff yet. A low end problem that needs to be cleaned up. So, back to work it is.
