Guillaume Martineau

After being awarded the Yamaha Canada Scholarship and having received the funding of both the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and Fonds Québecois de Recherche sur la Société et la Culture (FQRSC), pianist Guillaume Martineau has obtained his Master of music degree in Performance at McGill University under the supervision of Prof. Richard Raymond. He completed his undergraduate degree at Université de Montréal with Prof. Gilles Manny. In the summer of 2008, he was a visiting student at Indiana University and was part of Menahem Pressler’s studio. He has also studied with Anton Kuerti, Julian Martin, Évelyne Brancart, Kevin Fitzgerald, and Walter Delahunt. Sought as a pianist since he was young, Guillaume was invited to participate at the International Music Festival of Neuilly-Plaisance in France at 12 years old. Since then, he has received numerous prizes, including three times the Lucille-Brassard Prize, which is awarded to the student with the highest average on the exams of Vincent-d'Indy School of Music. For seven consecutive years from 1997 till 2003, he won the 1st Prize of the Festival of the Young Musicians of the Laurentides. In 2004, he captured the first place at the Music Festival of Sillery and the first Oliver-Jones prize of the Bas-Richelieu Competition (1st price all categories). In 2006, in addition to winning the first prize at the Clermont-Pépin Competition, he has gone to win the first place of his age category at the Canadian Music Competition. Finally, he was the great winner of the 2008 Hydro-Quebec award of the Festival du Royaume in Chicoutimi (1st place all categories). Guillaume has had the opportunity to be a guest soloist with several orchestras. Since 2003, he was invited for four concerts with the New World Philharmonic Orchestra directed by Michel Brousseau. In 2004, Guillaume Martineau was asked to play in the city of Sorel with the Longueil Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Marc David. In winter 2005, he participated to a benefit concert of the Ste-Thérèse d’Avila Church with the Youth Orchestra Laval-Laurentides. Then, after winning the 2007-08 edition of the McGill Classical Concerto Competition, Guillaume had the opportunity to perform Beethoven’s 3rd concerto with the McGill Symphony Orchestra conducted by Maestro Alexis Hauser. Guillaume has given many solo recitals in Montreal’s region. In April, 2005, Guillaume was invited to participate at the Expo Culture Québec Japon during the World Fair of Aïchi in Japan. He toured the cities of Osaka, Nagoya and Kobe, giving eight concerts. Guillaume is currently studying Jazz Piano with Mr. Jan Jarczyk (McGill University). He has previously been introduced to jazz with Mr. Pierre Leduc (Université de Montréal). In the summer of 2009, he was a student of Mr. Oliver Jones in the Academy of Orford Arts Centre. We can hear Guillaume performing live in his radio-show La Schubertiade des temps modernes. This entirely improvised radio-show is broadcasted every Tuesday from 11pm to 1am at CIBL 101.5 FM Radio-Montreal.--------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- Ayant reçu les subventions du Conseil de recherches en sciences humaines du Canada (CRSH) et du Fonds québécois de recherche sur la société et la culture (FQRSC) en plus d’être récipiendaire d’une bourse Yamaha Canada, Guillaume vient de terminer une maîtrise en interprétation à l’Université McGill sous la direction de M. Richard Raymond. Il compléta son baccalauréat à l’Université de Montréal auprès de M. Gilles Manny. À l’été 2008, il fut étudiant visiteur à l’Université d’Indiana grâce au support du Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ). À cette occasion, il obtint une place dans le studio de l’éminent pianiste Menahem Pressler, membre-fondateur du Trio Beaux-Arts. Au fil des années, il a également obtenu les conseils des maîtres suivants : Anton Kuerti, Évelyne Brancart, Julian Martin, Daniel Epstein, Kyoko Hashimoto, André de Groote, Kevin Fitzgerald et Walter Delahunt.. Très jeune, ce musicien commençait déjà à être sollicité. À douze ans, on l’invita à participer au Festival International de Musique de Neuilly-Plaisance en France. Par la suite, il devint récipiendaire de nombreux prix. De 1998 à 2000, on le récompensa trois fois de suite du prix Lucille-Brassard remis à l’élève ayant eu la plus haute moyenne aux examens de Vincent-d’Indy. Pendant sept années consécutives de 1997 à 2003, il monopolisa le 1er Prix au Festival des Jeunes Musiciens des Laurentides. En 2004, il emporta la première place dans la classe piano défi au Festival de musique de Sillery ainsi que le Prix Oliver-Jones du Concours de Musique du Bas-Richelieu (1er prix toutes catégories). En 2006, il obtient le 1er Prix au Concours Clermont-Pépin. Il fut le grand gagnant de la bourse Hydro-Québec 2008 du Festival du Royaume à Chicoutimi (1er prix toutes catégories). Finalement, en 2009, il remporte 1er Prix au prestigieux Concours de Musique du Canada. À maintes reprises, Guillaume eut l’occasion de se produire avec orchestre. Depuis 2003, il fut quatre fois le pianiste invité de l’Orchestre Philharmonique du Nouveau Monde dirigé par Michel Brousseau. En 2004, Guillaume Martineau fut appelé à jouer dans la ville de Sorel avec l’Orchestre Symphonique de Longueuil sous la direction de Marc David. À l’hiver 2005, le pianiste participa à un concert-bénéfice de l’Église Ste-Thérèse d’Avila avec l’Orchestre Symphonique des Jeunes Laval-Laurentides et son chef André Gauthier. Puis, après avoir emporté l’édition 2007-08 du concours de concerto classique de l’Université McGill, Guillaume eut la chance de se produire avec le McGill Symphony Orchestra sous la direction de maestro Alexis Hauser. Guillaume donne fréquemment des récitals en solo dans la région de Montréal. En avril 2005, Guillaume fut invité à participer à l’Expo Culture Québec Japon en marge de l’Exposition Universelle d’Aïchi au Japon. Il y effectua une tournée de huit concerts autour des grandes villes d’Osaka, Nagoya et Kobe. Guillaume a approfondi le piano jazz auprès de M. Jan Jarczyk de l’Université McGill. Il fut auparavant initié au jazz avec M. Pierre Leduc de l’Université de Montréal. À l’été 2009, il a été l’étudiant de M. Oliver Jones lors d’un stage au Centre d’Arts d’Orford. On peut entendre Guillaume Martineau performer en direct dans le cadre de son émission de radio La Schubertiade des temps modernes. Cette émission musicale au contenu entièrement improvisé est diffusée tous les mardis de 23h à 1h sur les ondes de CIBL Radio-Montréal au 101,5 FM.
