Mel Robertson began her film career in New York after studying at NYU and SVA, when her original screenplay entitled, Heroine, won the Best Alternative Drama Award at the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival in 2001.
Shortly after winning the NYIIF, Mel was invited to study at the world-renowned NC School of the Arts, Film Conservatory, where she was mentored by Producers Nicole LaLoggia (Swingers, See Jane Run) and Dale Pollock (Set It Off, Mrs. Winterbourne) in the Producing and Screenwriting disciplines.
After departing the conservatory, Mel produced the 35mm short film, Christmas Wish List, which won the GOLD at the 33rd Annual Academy Awards in the Narrative category from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Christmas Wish List, has also won the Directors’ Guild of America’s Eva Marie Saint Media Award, the Angelus Film Festival’s Triumph Award and the NYC Downtown Short Film Festival. Wish List was also an Official Selection at The Palm Beach Film Festival, Heart of Gold Film Festival, River Run Film Festival and was screened at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival.
In late 2006 Mel had her directorial debut on the dark fable, FEED, a new feature by King Chimaera, which she also wrote. FEED is currently in production in Los Angeles. Principle photography will wrap in May, 2008. Mel also just completed a write on a dark comedy feature entitled, The Natural, which she is attached to direct. The Natural will begin shooting in Los Angeles in early 2009.
At present, Mel is in development on Adrift, a feature length dogma project about two couples who are stranded with their secrets in the snow covered mountains of New England. Mel designed the concept for the film and is attached to direct.
In her spare time, Mel is a freelance Producer for Ignition Films in Hollywood, where she has Produced several series, promos and spots for such companies as Disney, MGM, Comedy Central, G4TV, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and Pay Up Sucker Productions.
She is managed by Amy Severson of A2M Productions. She lives in Los Angeles.
