Niel is a long time resident of the Bay Area and has been performing on the trumpet since age 11. He has toured Europe with the Stanford Jazz Orchestra and Louie Bellson, Jon Faddis, and the Pete Escovedo Orchestra with appearances at the Montreux Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival, Umbria Jazz Festival, and the Vienne Jazz Festival.
When he is not touring or recording, Niel can be found in one of the many performing arts venues in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Recently, Niel played with Gladys Knight at Oakland's historic Paramount Theatre, The Dave Brubeck Big Band, Bernadette Peters, Frankie Valli, Mitzi Gaynor, the 10 month San Francisco run of "The Rat Pack is Back", a Broadway type show celebrating the infamous Rat Pack at the Marines Memorial Theatre and the West Coast premier of the Broadway show "Love, Janis", the life story of Janis Joplin.
