Producer's Statement...Although Hip Hop originated in the streets of the Bronx as the voice of inner city youth - thirty-two years later, Hip Hop has become a national and international phenomenon that transcends class, nationality, race and urban boundaries. It is no secret that Hip Hop has evolved into a global community and culture. In recognition of the significance of this cultural movement, NJPAC established PLANET HIP HOP.PLANET HIP HOP 3, the third edition of this bi-annual conference and festival, will provide a platform for local, regional, and international artists to engage in dialogue, debate, and to express different art forms, experiences, and opinions. Over the course of four days, more than 40 artists from 4 continents will converge in Newark, New Jersey to participate in panels, performances, film screenings, art installations, open mics, parties, as well as university level education programs.PLANET HIP HOP seeks to go beyond the most visible and commercial aspects of Hip Hop. While Hip Hop artists are still rappin' and beatboxin' and b-boyin'- they are also curating art exhibitions, making films, producing theater, writing books, and becoming cultural critics, scholars, politicians, producers, and institution builders. We hope that you will join in this forum that acknowledges and respects the contributions, history, and impact of an art form that has infiltrated the consciousness of our planet, as well as our day-to-day lives.Ms. Baraka SeleAssistant Vice President of ProgrammingNJPAC Alternate Routes Curator/ProducerPLANET HIP HOP ProducerNovember 9 - 12, 2006" . . . few know that my peers are worldly, engaging, entrepreneurial, have traveled, have families, have college degrees and pay taxes like everybody else.
