Hello Everyone,
I am a writer and scholar. I was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti and raised in Canada. I have lived in Port-au-Prince, Québec City, Winnipeg, Halifax, Iowa City, Nashville, Arizona, Miami, Havana, Cassis, Santa Cruz, Noho, Perugia, Vancouver and Santa Barbara! Now I'm on my way to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. In the future I would love to live summers in Italy and long to visit the Greek Islands and Martinique/Guadeloupe. You've guessed it: I love to travel and would love to correspond with other world travelers.
As a consultant, I enjoy working with writers on their book projects from dissertations, to poetry collections, to, of course my favorite, novels. You can find out more about my services at my web page: www.myriamchancy.com.
I've published four books among which, my first novel, Spirit of Haiti (London : Mango Publications, 2003), was a finalist in the Best First Book Category, Canada/Caribbean region, of the Commonwealth Prize 2004. I am also the author of two books of literary criticism, Framing Silence : Revolutionary Novels by Haitian Women (Rutgers UP, 1997) and Searching for Safe Spaces : Afro-Caribbean Women Writers in Exile (Temple UP, 1997). Searching for Safe Spaces was awarded an Outstanding Academic Book Award 1998 by Choice, the journal of the American Library Association. My second novel, The Scorpion’s Claw (Peepal Tree Press, 2005) is currently being taught in a number of universities, including the University of Maryland and Amherst College.
I've just completed my third novel and have a few new things up my sleeve. Hopefully you'll be able to hear me on this page sometime soon. Visit www.MyriamChancy.com to learn more about my work, or to read excerpts from The Scorpion's Claw.
