God's Iron Tooth

About Me

This 3 song EP shows a hell of a lot of potential for California's God's Iron Tooth. If this disc was meant to be a representation of what this band could pull off on a full-length release then it more than accomplished it's goal...
Starting off the disc strong with the track "Bound With Electrical Tape" ,a cool title if I ever heard one, GIT had my attention from the beginning. This is one of those discs you can play all the way through and not get bored and switch to another track. Maybe it has to do with it only having 3 songs but all the tracks are fairly long and bands that can keep my attention past a songs 7 minute mark are few and far between. This disc is good solid sludge from beginning to end. I want to say to all the GIT guys, Ryan Anderson on bass, Jeremy Porter on guitar, Travis Ross on drums, and Phil White on vocals, that I had really almost had it with listening to this kind of music until I got your disc. If that doesn't say anything about the quality of the songwriting and recording of this EP I don't know what will...
A lot of bands in the sludge scene seem to get a lot of shit for sounding like Eyehategod but then I get CD's from these bands and I just don't hear the comparison. I guess every sludge band sounds like EHG in a way but I think every power metal band sounds like Judas Priest or Queensryche in a way. And almost every Death Metal band sounds like Carcass, Morbid Angel, or Cannibal Corpse. And these same critics don't say shit about that. There's my little rant for the week...
So I guess God's Iron Tooth have an Eyehategod influence, but dammit I hear a little Motorhead in there. Check out the opening bass line of "No Love, Just Noise" and tell me that doesn't remind you of Motorhead. And even if you don't like Motorhead you have to respect the fact that Lemmy is really ugly and still gets more action than you, kind of like the Ron Jeremy of metal.
Anyway, I expect you'll hear more about this band if they continue to put out quality work like this. Just straight-up sludge, cool-ass riffs, plenty of time changes, and pissed off screaming. My kind of band...

God's Iron Tooth
"The Last Vista Session" CD
Grade: A
This is the first official release (finally) by Orange County's heaviest band. Three songs totalling at thirty minutes, you can bet your bottom dollar (whatever that means) that this shit is pretty fucking slow. In fact, I can't think of many slower parts than at about 5:30 on "No Love, Just Noise", outside of Grief. If it was all that slow I wouldn't be nearly into it, but the first two songs start out so rocking, it'll be a challenge not to snap your neck from headbanging. The third song is really sludgey, but it picks up in the middle. There are quite a few unforgettable riffs on this record, so anyone who's into riff-heavy stuff like Iron Monkey or Kyuss (except more metal than Kyuss) really needs to check into this band.
