THIS IS SEDNA...Written by Jessica L. Earley
The beginning...
In the winter of 2004, Josh Strasko (vocals) contacted long-time friend Mark Scully (guitars) expressing an interest in starting a heavy metal band. Just two weeks later, Sedna was born in a practice space in Wall, NJ. Between then and now, the founding members have undertaken an exhaustive search for musicians that, when added, serve to create just the right chemistry to make Sedna what it has ultimately become…a family. In Jay Polk (guitars), and Gerard Conte (drums), Pat Lewis (bass) Josh and Mark finally encountered what they had been looking for…band mates with equal dedication, passion, and talent.
What's in a name?...
Sedna, a recent planet-like discovery, is extremely far from the sun, in the coldest known region of our solar system, where temperatures never rise above minus 400 degrees Fahrenheit. The planetoid is usually even colder, because it approaches the sun only briefly during its 10,500- year solar orbit. Even its elliptical orbit is unlike anything previously seen by astronomers. The object, called Sedna for the Inuit goddess of the ocean, is 13 billion kilometers (8 billion miles) away, in the darkest reaches of our solar system.
The turmoil, the brink of extinction, the resurrection...
During Sedna's first three years in existence, continually shifting band members seemed to move in and out through a virtual revolving door, due to either personal issues or creative differences. This repeatedly occurred just as the band was offered a chance to break into the music industry, causing the guys to have to watch, in heartbreak, as these golden opportunities passed them by. At times, it even seemed as though whichever members remained might be forced to throw in the towel. After much soul-searching, though, they always returned with the same decision. None could give up on this journey, which meant so much to each guy individually, and even more to the whole, collectively. Thus, the Sedna dream never died, but rather grew stronger as the final, definitive band lineup was set in stone. If you ask the guys, they all agree that they would not change a thing. In fact, they state that the entire struggle has added to whom and for what Sedna stands.
The fans and their support...
The guys find it remarkable that Sedna, having just only released their first CD, has maintained such a loyal fan base through their absences from the music scene and internal growing pains. From the band's first show, in the back room of a BBQ joint to selling out the legendary Stone Pony (Asbury Park, NJ), the undying support of local fans has been an integral part of Sedna's continuing evolution.
The reputation for respect...
Sedna has always been known for its respect towards promoters, establishments, and other bands. This has lead to Sedna garnering the reputation as one of the most well-liked and most requested Metal bands in New Jersey and Abroad.
The music...
In every sense of the word, Sedna is reality…a reality that most are afraid to discuss and bring to the forefront. The band members always wanted the music itself to reflect the intensity of the subject matter being discussed in the lyrics. Sedna's music is an unforgiving response to our current "reality television, plastic surgery, corruption-filled world". The band's singular perspective on reality is matched by its ability to make each song sound completely unique. This process entails never wavering from what makes a Sedna track truly groundbreaking, always recognizable, but never repetitive.
The Mission...
Sedna aims to make heavy metal matter again. The guys want people to understand that there is more out there than what exists on the FM dial, or on music television. All the while, they want to open the eyes and ears of the world to the horrors of everyday life and what we can do to change them.
