My name is derived from an American Indian word meaning “those who are friends.”I was born on March 2, 1836 when I told Mexico to shove it.I was my own republic until I joined the Union nine years later- what the US has never come to terms with is that 1845 is actually the year they joined me.I am host to technology, petroleum, natural gas, farming, steel, women with big hair and men with big trucks.I have 254 counties.My stars at night are big and bright.My sheer size prohibits easy categorization but I have coast, plains, lowlands, hills, mountains and desert. I also dabble in floods, droughts and tornadoes.I gave birth to Dr. Pepper, Bonnie and Clyde, Tejano, Mary Kay, Eisenhower, Jalapeno Pepper Jelly, Western Swing, A.J.
