This is The Official Cappie Pondexter fan site.This is where you can find out the latest news, schedules, and updates on Cappie.Cappie was born on January 7, 1983 and hails from Chicago, Illinois. She is the daughter of Vanessa and Leo Pondexter and has one brother, Ronald Brown, and one sister, Latoya Pondexter. She attended Rutgers University from 2001-2006 where she earned her degree in African studies.
Prior to her college years she attended John Marshall High School (Ill.), where she was named the 2001 National Player of the Year by THE WBCA and Parade Magazine, was elected as the 2001 Illinois Player of the Year by Gatorade and USA Today.
She also became the first player in the state to be twice named Illinois Miss Basketball (2000, 2001). During her four years, Marshall compiled a 116-8 record and earned three Chicago Public League titles, the 1998 Illinois state crown and a 1999 state runner-up finish.
While playing at Rutgers, the Scarlet Knights posted a 97-22 (.815) record, won the 2005 and 2006 Big East Conference championships, and competed in four NCAA Tournaments, including the 2005 Elite Eight. As a senior, she aided Rutgers to a 27-5 slate, to include a perfect 16-0 mark in the Big East, she averaged 21.6 ppg. 4.2 rpg., 3.2 apg. and 1.7 spg.
•Named the 2006 Women’s Basketball News Service National Player of the Year.
•Lists as a finalist for the 2006 State Farm Wade Trophy, Naismith Award, John R. Wooden Award, the Bayer Advantage Senior CLASS Award, and is also among the finalists for the 2006 Nancy Lieberman Award as the nation’s top point guard.
•Listed on the 2006 Associated Press (A.P.) All-America first team, 2005 third team and was a 2003 A.P. All-America honorable mention.
•A unanimous selection for the 2006 Big East Player of the Year award and became the first player in Big East history to earn a spot on the All-Big East first team all four years.
•A four-time Big East All-Tournament Team honoree.
•Finalist for the 2005 Naismith Player of the Year, State Farm Wade Trophy, Wooden Award, and the Nancy Lieberman Award.
•Three-time Kodak/WBCA All-America honorable mention.
•Named the 2003 Big East Rookie of the Year.
•Named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2005 NCAA Philadelphia Region.
•Earned 2003 All-America honorable mention from Basketball Times.
•One of two rookies to be named as finalists for the 2003 Nancy Lieberman Award.
•Averaged 18.3 ppg., 5.1 rpg., 4.9 apg. and 1.8 spg. as a rookie, while aiding the Scarlet Knights to the biggest turnaround in Division I, improving from 9-20 in 2001-02 to 21-8 in 2002-03.
Cappie was the No. 2 draft pick in 2006 selected by the Phoenix Mercury. She was named as a member of the 2006 WNBA All Rookie-Team, 2006 WNBA Allstar, and was the runner-up in the 2006 Rookie of the Year voting.
She finished her rookie campaign ranked fourth among league leaders for scoring (19.5 ppg.), sixth for assist-to-turnover ratio (2.2) and 10th for free throw shooting percentage (.853).In addition, she was WNBA Player of the Week, June 5-11th,set the WNBA rookie-record 226 points in first ten career games,scored 20 or more in 14 of 23 games,scored 20 or more in six straight games (5/25-6-13), and had back-to-back 30 point games (6/2, 6/6). She and Diana Taurasi became the first teammates to score (6/6) 30 or more in the same game.
At the National level, she was Co-captain of the following teams: 2002 USA World Championship for Young Women Qualifying Team that earned a pair of exhibition victories over the Brazil senior and young women national teams finishing with a 4-0 record and the gold medal,the 2003 USA World Championship for Young Women Team that captured the gold medal with a 7-1 record in Sibenik, Croatia, averaged 5.3 ppg, the 2005 USA World University Games Team that captured the gold medal with a perfect 7-0 record in Turkey; averaged a USA fifth-best 8.9 ppg., while adding 3.1 rpg, and a team-high 23 assists.
She was One of two WNBA rookies-to-be named to the 2006 USA Basketball Senior National Team that recorded a 4-1 slate and won the Australia-hosted 2006 Opals World Challenge. Her medals include:
•Gold in the 2007 FIBA Americas Championship, qualifying the USA for the 2008 Olympics.
•Gold in the 2005 World University Games
•Gold in the 2003 FIBA World Championship for Young Women
•Gold in 2002 World Championship for Young Women Qualifying Tournament
•Gold in 2000 Junior World Championship Qualifying Tournament
•Bronze in the 2001 FIBA Junior World Championship.
Cappie played in Turkey for Fenerbahce during the 2006 off season. During this experience, she earned the Euroleague Allstar MVP award and led her team to win its fifth TBBL Championship.
During the 2007 season,the Phoenix Mercury won the 2007 WNBA Championship,in which Cappie was named the MVP.
She recently completed another successful season with Fenerbahce in Turkey, winning the Turkish Cup for the second season in a row.In the 2008 season, she finished third in scoring(29.2 ppg) in the WNBA and won an Olympic Gold medal with the USA Senior National Team. She is playing for UMMC Ekaterinburg in Russia this off season.
