I was born at an early age.
I wouldn't exactly say that I "could sing long before I could talk", but fairly soon after I had developed the ability to form vowel and consonants, I realised that these could be used to make words, sentences and creative noises, all of varying coherance.
I was a bit of a smartipants early on in my school career and was easily bored, so my parents decided to nuture some other interests...which led to me learning Piano & Clarinet (I believe the term is "Classically Trained") and later teaching myself the Sax, Guitar, and a bit of Bass and Flute. I never practised as much as I should have and I was never going to a Concert Pianist! However, I realise now that all the lessons, exams, analysis, theory etc were a means to an end - to provide me with the ability to create music. I sing too, but not well enough to call myself a Singer per se!
I'm also interested in language. I like playing with words and metaphors. I'm reasonably fluent in German as well as being able to understand some French and Spanish and knowing some odd words in various other languages. It fascinates me where words and sayings come from and how some things translate while others just don't . (It half-amused, half-offended a Greek-German friend of mine that in English, we have the phrase "It's all Greek to me". The German translation amused me more - "It's a Bohemian Village to me"). Anyway, I digress...the point being, that I enjoy being creative with lyrics as much as music.
When I was young (and not very good at all this), my parents made the mistake of letting me amuse myself with a casette recorder and mic. I think I wrote and recorded my first song at the age of 3 - ok, so the words didn't make a lot of sense and the tune left a little to be desired, but everyone's gotta start somewhere. When I visited my grandpop, his neighbours also indulged me playing "Name That Tune"....except that I didn't know any tunes so I made them up using random notes on the piano.
The other main things that interest me and feed what I do as a musician are Science, Philosophy and Psychology. I could probably find an argument to justify my belief that most things in this World come down to Physics. (Music is essentially physics that sounds good!) Philosophy is how we reconcile what Science can't yet (or may never) explain and Psychology describes how we respond and interact with the World.
Hmm....deep!
Anyhow - thankfully, as the years went past, I got a little better playing, singing and writing...and now, here I am! This may be a venture you yet live to regret, but we'll see!
One day, I would love to write a film soundtrack...and who knows, maybe it'll happen. For now, I'm mainly concentrating on songwriting....and that's what I'll be posting up here - hopefully pretty soon.
