RELIX MAGAZINE: ISSUE 24-03 - May/June - 1997 ''TOO NEW TO BE KNOWN'' by Mick Skidmore... Last year we covered the excellent genre-jumping band KARMIC from Grand Rapids, Michigan, which now has an excellent new release, Whimsical Stew (Run Records). The discs title should give you an inkling that the band continues to juxtapose various musical styles with ease and style. Like many other eclectic outfits, it draws equally on jazz, funk, blues, folk and rock. This band, however, melds those influences together and emerges with a sound that is fresh and full of original vitality. Influences of Phish, the Allman Brothers, Pink Floyd and Chick Corea are evident, but the end result is KARMIC! The new CD, which was recorded mostly live in the studio, delivers some truly inspired music from the jazz-meets-country of "Fungus" to the lyrical "Prester John" through to the more experimental sounds of the instrumental title cut and the extremely impressive classical slanted piano musings of "Morphing Impressions." Highly recommended! -------- RELIX MAGAZINE: ISSUE 23-05 - September/October - 1996 ''TOO NEW TO BE KNOWN'' by Mick Skidmore... KARMIC began playing Dead, Zappa, Pink Floyd and Steely Dan covers as well as traditional acoustic music. It has amassed a huge local, regional and now national following based on both its covers and original material that draws liberally from all influences. For the new disc, Whimsical Stew, the band has gotten more exploratory by blending acoustic and electric together. Sister Chosen One and Whimsical Stew both show that KARMIC has an immense ability at combining melody and neat rhythmic grooves. This is sophisticated music with integrity and an inventive streak. Theres a strong underlying sense of jazz to much of its music thats jazz by the likes of Larry Coryell, John McLaughlin and Chick Corea. Great stuff!
