About Me

(HUMBLE BEGINNINGS........)An under ground M.C for 8years, he has entertained crowds at Weekends, Battle Thursdays, Digi-cels Rising Stars, also at Peppers and Indies. This determined Kingstonian continues to feed the peoples ears with Mix-tapes and collaborations with other upcoming artistes. The son of a broken home; Matthew’s mother unfortunately left him at a tender age to pursue a better life for her self in Grand Cayman leaving him with his father in Horizon Park Spanish Town, due to irreconcilable differences. Having only his Grand mother at the time as the only female presence in his life, young Keyss became with drawn from society, until he reunited with his mother for the first time at age 5, when she had moved back to Jamaica in the Mona area of Kingston six (6) in the nineteen eighties. This experience changed him in ways even he never knew possible; due to the fact she was the total opposite of his father. Matthew’s Father is an accomplished Artist skilled in the areas of water paint, charcoal, pastel, etc. and also a founding member of the Jamaican guild of artistes’ at some point in the nineteen seventies, Matthew vividly remembers being punished for graffiting a charcoal painting of his grandfather done by his father, Matthew still laughs to this day and says: “It was a learning experience”. But his father always wanted a better life for his kids, I say kids because by this time he had moved on, met someone else and had another baby boy on his hands. Matthew’s brother. The new family moved “Uptown” at the waterloo apartments in new Kingston, where keys had to be enrolled in public school that year, previously he was home schooled by grandma. He attended several prominent schools at this point just to get his footing and settle down, first it was Gainsted high, them Vas preparatory and finally Ardenne preparatory. Then after a failed attempt at the common entrance (CxC) he finally got a scholarship to attend the pristine Jamaica collage.............(CHAIN OF EVENTS........)But- Matthew was still unhappy, he just couldn’t understand why his parents were separated, thus becoming more depressed, he started drinking heavily and smoking marijuana. But it was this chain of events that molded the artiste keyss. Matthew’s closest friend at the time Robert Cobran aka Cable Guy was also a good basket ball star and freestyle wiz, he prompted Matthew to write and try and get studio experience at the same time, so every evening cable and keys would go to Mona commons to link with Machel Witter and Shane Dixon, J.C comrades as well who had, and still have a love for hip-hop in Jamaica. This is where Matthew met the creative minds of Kevin and Keron aka Nova and Pyramid from the local hip-hop camp “Bebble team”, it is also how he met the late great Tiewo Mc-kenzie also known as Rap Brown, who was slain in late 2007. “This was my first taste of stardom” says Keyss, I enjoyed every minute of trying to find my voice over the mic, and developing my own style and craft. But God tests what kind of person you are, whoever you are and whatever you do, Matthew’s first true love who’s name shall not be mentioned to protect her family’s reputation became pregnant, and it was his; overjoyed and scared keys couldn’t contain himself and went to her house that night, but to his surprise his then girlfriend and baby mother, told him she wanted to have an abortion instead. Simply because she and her family are devoted Christians and to be so young and promiscuous would be an embarrassment to all. Which is the case of most households in Jamaica with girls, but Matthew wasn’t having it, because the life of a child was more precious than any embarrassment in his eyes, Needless to say he wasn’t working but she was, and one fateful day at work she had a miscarriage and lost their child, less than three months later the woman who cared for Matthew as a child his grandmother had died as well. And at that time until keys became 24, he sank into a dark world of booze and smoke his only saving grace was music and hip-hop to vent his frustration and anger at the world. “Very few people knew what was going on inside me, not even my parents or close friends” says Keyss, That’s why I wrote Black Woman among other songs at the time, it was therapy more than any thing else for me. Machel Witter who Matthew had confided in, told him he needed a “pick me up” of sorts, and introduced him to a variety of producers, artistes, engineers, models and TV personalities, one such person was Craigy Sho, who formed a short-lived duo with keyss called A&X they recorded the banging track called, “pass me the mack10”, Craigy Sho also introduced Keyss to Judgment Squad from mountain view with artistes like LIL Joe, Gavin from Equinoxx music and Ricky martin from Black sands records where an up coming artiste know as Perrilous also recorded and rhymed with keys on occasion, All these things added to building the artiste known as Keyss.(THE BIGGER PICTURE.......)In 2004 Matt met another school mate who shared a similar hunger for hip-hop and was also friends with Jason, Swire, Machel ,Sho, and Shane. His name is Tarik aka T.S.D (the sickest drama) whom we had a kinship with. By that time both men were confident in releasing a mix tape known as Vice Citi (or the underworld) which would catapult them as rising rap stars from Jamaica. This mix tape hosted a flurry of talent, ranging from rappers like: 12:30, Mezmo, Walabees, Tsd, Keyss, to d.j’s like: Koro Fya, Devious, Abie 1 and production from Instincts as well. For the first time Matthew saw a light shining in the distance, a glimmer of hope that music was gonna pay off at last. But things took a U-turn when tarik invited his neighbor to be the group’s road manager/booking agent/financial adviser on the project; a person that none had known before, only tarik. Keys felt uncomfortable and pulled out of the Vice Citi project, citing creative differences. I’m not the most affluent, articulate, prudent or well accepted person, a lot of people don’t like me for whatever reason, some things are my fault I admit that, but I’m sure the majority of haters out there are misinformed or just never knew my upbringings, or circumstances that led me to wild out as a young –man with rage Says keys. This is the Ultimate story of struggle, a brown, formerly upper class youth, faced with struggles of the Jamaican urban jungle: violence, parental strife, hypocrisy and animosity. Still aspiring for stardom keyss is more focused and determined to become successful in his own life, and hopes to educate children who not only wish to follow music like himself, but also those who are faced with the same issues he has faced. He also hopes to bring awareness to young women who are confronted with unplanned pregnancies and hopes to show them his own battles as a source of encouragement. Matthew’s role Model’s and influences include: Shine-Head, Jimmy Cliff, Muta, Burning Spear, 2pac, Sade, OutKast, Eminem, Rakim, Nas, Group home,.. Diana King, KRS 1, the Fugees, Busta Rhymes, Buju-Banton, Andrew Case, Lost Boys, Mom/Dad and all the surviving members of Wu-tang and their counter parts. Standing at only five ft three (5ft3), Matthew Lyons more commonly known as Keyss, has led a tumultuous music career since the tender age of fifteen but still appreciates all lessons learned along the way.I respect down to earth people, (bigg up to all the ppl who supported me throughout hard times)
